Saint Joseph Hospital - Elgin is seeking an Associate Chaplain to join the Spiritual Care team. The role supports patients, families, and staff with compassionate spiritual care and collaborates with the Experience Department to ensure a respectful, dignified patient experience.

The position emphasizes timely response, needs assessment, and professionally documenting rounds while providing psychosocial support during emergencies as needed.

Qualifications

• Minimum of 1 Clinical Pastoral Education (CPE) unit.
• Endorsement or Commissioning by their Faith Tradition, and in good standing with their Governing Body and Authority.
• Ordination in their Faith Tradition.
• Minimum of one year in ministry with demonstrated competence in pastoral care.
• Previous pastoral care experience within healthcare preferred.
• Strong written and verbal communication skills.
• Bachelor's degree preferred.

Responsibilities

• Staff the Mission Services Department at their assigned hospitals and respond to requests for spiritual care.
• Assess religious and spiritual needs of patients, families, and staff, and provide or coordinate support.
• Offer spiritual guidance and document rounds performed on patients and staff.
• Participate in service recovery when needed and support the Experience Department to deliver compassionate care.
• Provide psychosocial support during hospital emergencies per Incident Command.

Responsibilities

The Associate Chaplain position is managed by the Spiritual Care Specialist in partnership with the Vice President of Mission Services to staff the Mission Services Department at their assigned hospitals. This department is responsible for the management and quality of religious and spiritual care of the patients, families, and their visitors, as well as hospital staff members. The Associate Chaplain will be responsible for the religious and spiritual needs of the patients, families, and their visitors, as well as hospital staff members. This position will respond in a timely manner to all requests for spiritual care and assistance. The Associate Chaplain will assess the religious and spiritual needs of the client, and address or assist in addressing these needs whenever possible. The Associate Chaplain will offer spiritual support and guidance where appropriate. This position adheres and ensures the mission is integrated with ethical values into patient care and spiritual care delivery. The Associate Chaplain partners with the Experience Department to provide a caring compassionate experience for all patients, their families, and fellow team members which includes documenting rounds done on patients and staff and performing service recovery when needed. This position is expected to provide support during a Hospital Emergency at the Incident Command, if needed, relative to their role of psychosocial support. Performs related responsibilities as required.

The Associate Chaplain position consistently demonstrates clinical excellence and professional standards, with a focus on achieving board certification. Associate Chaplain is expected to identify and obtain necessary training for their chosen chaplain specialty. This role should develop research competency and engage in best practices utilized across health system.
