Job summary

Naval Nuclear Laboratory is seeking a Propulsion Plant Integration Engineer to help bring a first-of-a-kind battleship propulsion system to life. You will work at the intersection of ship design, plant engineering, and Navy decision-making, translating high-level concepts into integrated propulsion solutions.

The role emphasizes hands-on systems thinking, cross-disciplinary collaboration, and rigorous analysis to ensure performance, safety, and reliability for naval reactors and Navy fleets.

Responsibilities

  • Participate in conceptual studies to inform Navy decision-making on key propulsion plant features, tradeoffs, and risks.
  • Support the integration of battleship specific systems into the propulsion plant
  • Develop and refine concepts of operation for a single plant surface combatant
  • Validate design compliance with surface combatant and platform requirements and identify and resolve non conformances
  • Interface with the battleship Lead Design Yard, BPMI, and Navy representatives to align propulsion plant integration with ship design and fleet needs.
  • Perform system analysis to evaluate the impacts of design decisions
  • Coordinating with other engineering disciplines to ensure seamless propulsion plant integration into the overall ship design

Job Description

Join the team that will define how the next-generation battleship is powered and operated.

We are seeking a Propulsion Plant Integration Engineer to help bring a proven nuclear propulsion plant design into a new, first-of-a-kind battleship (BBGN). This is a hands-on, systems-level role where you'll work at the intersection of ship design, plant engineering, operations, and Navy decision-making.

The successful candidate will:

  • Participate in conceptual studies to inform Navy decision-making on key propulsion plant features, tradeoffs, and risks.
  • Support the integration of battleship specific systems into the propulsion plant
  • Develop and refine concepts of operation for a single plant surface combatant
  • Validate design compliance with surface combatant and platform requirements and identify and resolve non conformances

Required Combination Of Knowledge And Skill

Bachelors degree from an accredited college or university in a related technical, engineering or science field; or Masters degree from an accredited college or university in a related technical, engineering or science field.

Preferred Skills
  • Prior Navy experience with nuclear propulsion plant operations (ship or prototype)
  • Background in submarine plant engineering or previous plant or prototype qualification
  • Degree in Mechanical, Chemical, Naval Architecture/Marine, or Systems Engineering is preferred; other engineering degrees with relevant experience will be considered
  • Demonstrated self starter with the ability to take an ambiguous task, structure the work, and drive it to closure.
  • Strong organizational skills and ability to manage multiple parallel technical issues
  • Good communication and technical writing skills, including the ability to clearly document analyses and present recommendations to both technical and non technical stakeholders

Pay Range

$63,900.00 - $97,800.00 annually

Salary information provided is a general guideline only. Annual salary is based upon candidate experience and qualifications, as well as market and business considerations.

The Naval Nuclear Laboratory is operated for the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) by Fluor Marine Propulsion, LLC (FMP), a wholly owned subsidiary of Fluor Corporation. Naval Nuclear Laboratory personnel are FMP employees who work at four DOE facilities: Bettis Atomic Power Laboratory, Knolls Atomic Power Laboratory, Kenneth A. Kesselring Site, and Naval Reactors Facility, and at the U.S. Department of Defense-owned Nuclear Power Training Unit-Charleston. FMP employees also have an established presence at numerous shipyards and vendor locations. For nearly 70 years, the Naval Nuclear Laboratory has developed advanced nuclear propulsion technology, provided technical support, and trained world-class nuclear operators to ensure the safe and reliable operation of our nation's submarine and aircraft carrier Fleets. The Naval Nuclear Laboratory is a national asset solely dedicated to the Naval Nuclear Propulsion Program. We rely on the dedication and innovation of our nearly 8000 engineers, scientists, technicians, and support personnel.
