About the Role
A well-established Midtown Manhattan construction law firm with an expanding practice is seeking an experienced Associate Attorney to join its growing team. This position is ideal for a mid-level attorney with 5+ years of litigation experience and a strong interest or background in construction law.
Billable Hours & Bonus Eligibility
Associates are expected to meet an annual requirement of 1,800 billable hours.
Meeting billable-hour expectations is a factor in determining year-end bonus eligibility, along with the employee remaining in good standing, overall performance, and other factors determined by the firm.
Schedule
This position is initially 100% onsite, Monday through Friday, in Midtown Manhattan. After approximately six months, or once the Associate has demonstrated that performance expectations are being consistently met, there may be an opportunity to work remotely on Fridays.
Key Responsibilities
- Directly handle and maintain primary responsibility for multiple litigation matters from inception through resolution.
- Manage all phases of litigation, including case analysis, pleadings, discovery, depositions, motion practice, hearings, court appearances, mediations, arbitrations, and trials.
- Handle matters involving construction law, 881 proceedings, construction disputes, and related litigation.
- Draft, review, negotiate, and advise on construction-related agreements, transactional contracts, leases, and other legal documents.
- Conduct comprehensive legal research and prepare high-quality written work product, including motions, briefs, memoranda, pleadings, and correspondence.
- Provide legal counsel and strategic guidance to clients within the construction industry.
- Develop case strategies and independently manage deadlines, discovery obligations, and client expectations.
- Represent clients in negotiations, mediations, arbitrations, and other dispute-resolution proceedings.
- Collaborate with partners, associates, and legal support staff on complex litigation and transactional matters.
- Maintain strong client relationships through responsive communication and practical legal guidance.
- Stay current on developments in New York construction law, litigation, and related regulatory matters.
- Mentor and provide guidance to junior attorneys and legal support staff as appropriate.
- Consistently meet the firm's professional, performance, and billable-hour expectations.
Required Qualifications
- Juris Doctor (J.D.) from an accredited law school.
- 5+ years of attorney experience, with significant litigation experience.
- Active New York Bar admission in good standing is required.
- Experience with construction law and/or construction-related litigation strongly preferred.
- Experience with RPAPL § 881 proceedings is highly desirable.
- Experience drafting and negotiating transactional and construction-related contracts.
- Demonstrated ability to independently manage multiple active litigation matters.
- Strong experience with pleadings, discovery, motions, court appearances, and dispute resolution.
- Excellent legal research and writing skills are essential.
- Strong analytical, negotiation, organizational, and problem-solving abilities.
- Ability to operate independently while collaborating effectively with a legal team.
- Excellent client-facing communication and interpersonal skills.
- High standards of professionalism, judgment, and ethics.
- Proficiency with legal research platforms and legal technology.
Preferred Qualifications
- New Jersey Bar admission in addition to New York.
- Direct construction law experience.
- Experience with RPAPL § 881 access proceedings.
- Experience representing owners, developers, contractors, subcontractors, or other construction-industry clients.
- Combination of construction litigation and transactional contract experience.
- Experience handling matters independently with limited supervision.
