Job description

Overview
  • Represent clients in removal proceedings before the Executive Office of Immigration Review, and develop appropriate legal defenses specific to client needs. Cases will include asylum, cancellation of removal, bond requests, adjustment of status in court, suppression of evidence and relevant motion practice before the Immigration Courts in the region.
  • Perform legal research and drafting of federal court litigation, including lawsuits addressing specialty occupations, agency delay and APA violations.
  • Draft persuasive correspondence and summaries to relevant administrative agencies and respond to requests for evidence.
  • Conduct legal research regarding regulations and procedures in immigration law.
  • Review high-volume of family-based immigration cases including immigrant and nonimmigrant cases with USCIS and the Department of State. Cases will include marriage-based adjustment of status, family-based adjustment of status, removal of conditions, I-601 and I-601A inadmissibility waivers, 212(d)(3) waivers, VAWA petitions, U-visas, DACA petitions, diversity lottery petitions, TPS, Global Entry and others.
  • Prepare family-based immigration petitions and applications, including assessing eligibility, analyzing relevant legal issues, developing evidence and addressing requests for further evidence.
  • Conduct case meetings with Case Coordinators and Case Managers in accordance with standard procedure of the practice group.
  • Correspond directly with clients and relevant administrative agencies.
  • Maintain organized legally compliant client files, update notes in database, monitor deadlines and communicate progress of individuals’ cases.
  • Contribute to the development of practice processes to ensure team operates efficiently and effectively.
Requirements
  • 1-3 year of experience in removal defense, asylum, and family-based immigration matters preferred.
  • Ability to independently address most common legal issues without needing to seek guidance from a Partner, while maintaining awareness of when such issues do require escalation.
  • Pre-existing knowledge of relevant laws, regulations, and agency practices for area of specialization.
  • Ability to effectively manage a caseload and deadlines.
  • High level of awareness of legal developments and agency practices.
  • High level of awareness of individual client needs and concerns.
  • Juris Doctor (JD) degree or equivalent.
  • State Bar Membership.
  • Strong verbal, written, and organizational skills.
  • Willingness to take on added responsibilities and learn new things.
  • Ability to show initiative and work as part of a team.
  • Attention to detail.
  • Ability to multi-task and prioritize.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office and ability to adapt quickly to firm-specific software.
  • Excellent time management skills.
