Job description

Assoc University Counsel

The Associate University Counsel provides comprehensive legal counsel, strategic risk management, and operational support across the UNM Health Sciences Center (UNMHSC). This position serves as transactional counsel, drafting, reviewing, negotiating UNM contracts and interpreting UNM Policy, FERPA, EMTALA, and anti‑kickback requirements. The role spans healthcare law, regulatory compliance, corporate governance, commercial contracts, and research integrity. It also includes various other tasks, including UNM Leadership and Governance support, support of the clinical delivery system, UNM clinical on‑call support, Patient Financial Services support, and occasional Main Campus support.

Applicants must be and remain licensed as an attorney, in good standing, by the Supreme Court of New Mexico, or licensed as an attorney by and in good standing with the highest court of another state and eligible to practice law pursuant to the limited license provisions set forth in Section 15-301.1 NMRA.

  • Employees in this title are subject to an employment contract subject to review and renewal annually.
  • Successful candidate who is not a member of the NM State Bar is required to obtain a temporary Public Employee Limited License issued by the NM Supreme Court.
  • Must become a member of the NM State Bar no later than one (1) year after date of hire.
  • Employees who provide services or work in patient care or clinical areas are required to be in compliance with the University's influenza vaccination requirement.

Minimum Qualifications: J.D. or L.L.B; at least 5 years of experience directly related to the duties and responsibilities specified. Certifications/License: Member of NM State Bar, or member in good standing of the State Bar of another state or district of Columbia.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • JD from an accredited law school and licensed in good standing in New Mexico.
  • 5+ years of experience in healthcare law (or corporate law), either in‑house or at a law firm.
  • Strong knowledge of federal health regulations, including HIPAA, Anti‑Kickback, FERPA, and EMTALA as well as higher education laws.
  • Experience in drafting and negotiating commercial contracts relating to federal health regulations.
