Job summary

Consumers Energy is seeking an Employee Relations Consultant to collaborate with People & Culture on internal investigations, compliance, and program administration. The role emphasizes fair, confidential handling of employee concerns, with focus on EEOC testing guidance, ADA compliance, and impact analysis.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Business, Compliance or related field; 2+ years of experience with administration and regulations (EEOC testing guidance, Ex Order 11246, ADA, Section 503, VEVRAA) and data analysis.
  • Experience in test validation, test administration and affirmative action administration and compliance.

Responsibilities

  • Manage employee relations cases through lifecycle: intake, triage, risk assessment, investigation, documentation, resolution, closure.
  • Conduct workplace investigations for harassment, discrimination, policy violations, ethics concerns and conflicts of interest.
  • Prepare investigation reports and executive summaries; communicate findings to leaders.

Location

This is a hybrid (virtual/onsite) position with required onsite days on Monday, Tuesday and Thursday. Preferred location is One Energy Plaza headquarters located in Jackson, MI or other service centers will be considerd dependent on location.The selected candidate must be within a commutable distance or willing to relocate (relocation package is available for those that qualify).


General Summary of Job Responsibilities

The Employee Relations Consultant works closely with People & Culture (P&C) department to investigate any internal issues and seeks resolution sensitively and confidentially. Issues may include complaints relating to harassment, discrimination or any potential high risk matter. Assist with compliance and regulations pertaining to Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC), such as testing guidance including training of all test administrators, data collection, adverse impact analysis and process improvement recommendations based on data. Requires managing and testing the applicant Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) accommodation process and management of the testing program. Assists with affirmative action program administration for policy development, annual internal audit, report validation and compliance with Executive Order 11246, Section 503 of Rehabilitation Act and Vietnam Era Veterans Readjustment Assistance Act (VEVRAA) under the direction/guidance of the EEO/Employee Relations Director.


Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Employee Relations Case Management and CARA Investigations


  • Manage employee relations cases through the complete case lifecycle including intake, triage, risk assessment, investigation, documentation, resolution recommendations, and case closure.

  • Conduct workplace investigations involving:

  • Harassment

  • Discrimination

  • Workplace misconduct and policy violations

  • Ethics concerns

  • Conflicts of interest

  • Workplace violence and threats

  • Substance abuse concerns

  • Attendance and conduct issues

  • Performance concerns

  • Accommodation-related concerns

  • Employee complaints and grievances

  • Conduct investigatory interviews and gather, review, and analyze relevant documentation, records, electronic evidence, and other information.

  • Identify legal, regulatory, operational, labor, and employee relations risks and elevate concerns appropriately.

  • Develop investigation plans, analyze facts, determine findings, and prepare clear and concise investigation reports and executive summaries.

  • Facilitate fact review meetings, corrective action discussions, and investigation closeout meetings.

  • Communicate findings and recommendations to leaders and key stakeholders.

  • Maintain case documentation and investigative records within HR Acuity and other approved case management systems.

  • Monitor case trends and identify opportunities for proactive interventions, training, policy updates, and risk mitigation.

  • Ensure investigations are conducted in a fair, objective, timely, and confidential manner.

  • Partner with Human Resources Business Partners, Labor Relations, Legal, Compliance, Security, and business leaders to assess concerns, evaluate risk, and develop appropriate resolution strategies.


Knowledge/Skills/Abilities


  • Prepare and run training sessions

  • Knowledge of laws and regulations impacting selection testing and affirmative action with ability to develop and administer programs to meet compliance components for corporation

  • Ability to conduct data analysis and problem identification and solving for process improvement

  • Adaptability and ability to work with ambiguity

  • Ability to analyze and interpret complex information, conduct research, and manage highly confidential and time sensitive matters

  • Ability to communicate clearly and influence others as well as effective implementation of program
