Responsibilities
Under the direction of the Head Women's Basketball Coach, the Assistant Women's Basketball Coach will assist in the administration and leadership of Johnson C. Smith University's DII Women's Basketball program. Responsibilities include, but are not limited to: providing coaching and instruction, women's basketball operations, recruiting, player development, scouting, preparation of practice activities, and other duties as assigned by the Head Women's Basketball Coach.
Specific Duties And Responsibilities
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
- Develops and implements programs to ensure the academic success of the women's basketball team; assists with programs supporting student-athlete academic success, retention, and progress toward degree completion.
- Manages and coordinates team activities, community service, and sponsorships.
- Maintains current knowledge of NCAA, CIAA, and Johnson C. Smith University rules and regulations.
- Assists with game day preparation, practice schedules, scouting reports, and manages team logistics such as locker room arrangements and attire.
- Supports out-of-season planning, workouts, and player development.
- Manages travel and lodging logistics for official visits, recruiting, and team travel.
- Serves in on-call rotation for room and curfew checks.
- Addresses behavioral issues with student athletes in collaboration with the head coach.
- Manages practice players and team managers.
- Provides regular updates to the head coach on team performance and schedule changes.
- Coordinates travel logistics, manages team schedules, and tracks player performance during practices and games.
- Reviews game film, scouts opponents, and prepares the team for upcoming games.
- Maintains records of game statistics, player performance, and team standings.
- Ensures team equipment is in good condition.
- Coordinates with student managers and marketing staff for practice and travel arrangements, advertising campaigns, and promotions.
- Collaborates with University Communications and Marketing to manage the team's social media presence, including graphics, photos, videography, and engagement strategies.
- Develops content and strategies to increase social media followership and engagement, hosts programs, and manages live event postings.
- Monitors and responds to comments and messages in a timely manner.
- Works with university staff to promote student involvement and cross-promote university events.
Additional Job Functions
This position involves exposure to indoor and outdoor conditions, including inclement weather. It requires significant travel, with frequent night and weekend hours.
Core Competencies/Skills
- Bachelor's degree; collegiate coaching and/or playing experience required.
- Strong communication, interpersonal, and organizational skills.
- Ability to recruit prospective student-athletes.
- Proficiency in basketball and knowledge of NCAA rules and regulations.
- Commitment to excellence and sensitivity to cultural differences.
- Proficiency with computer applications and office software.
- CPR Certification within 30 days of hire.
