Job Summary
The Assistant Coach will support the needs of the Head Coach as an integral member of the St. John's women's basketball staff, an NCAA Division I member institution and a founding member of the BIG EAST Conference.
The assistant coach will be a key component in each student-athlete's personal, professional, and athletic development. In addition to having a significant role in the recruitment, supervision, evaluation, and performance of the student-athletes on the women's basketball team, all other duties usually associated with an assistant coach for a Division I intercollegiate women's basketball program, are included but not limited to: selection of team members, development of player relationships, on-court coaching, play development and instruction, position assignment of players, opponent scheduling, opponent scouting, and film breakdown. The assistant coach will represent St. John's University and the University's Vincentian Mission, while emulating the Athletic Department's "Expect to Win" culture.
Essential Functions
- Assess and recruit elite-level prospective student-athletes to join the program and develop individualized development plans for each student-athlete relevant to their specific needs.
- Assist and maintain the recruiting database and coaches' communication with prospective student-athletes and manage the day-to-day functions of a recruiting calendar.
- Will serve as mentor and coordinate weekly meetings, building relationships to serve as the liaison between the student-athletes and head coach regarding, but not limited to: academics, basketball, and social awareness. This includes one out-of-office contact per month with specific student-athletes.
- Coordinate counseling and career services for current women's basketball student-athletes to assist in developing positive relationships, personal decision making, and becoming productive members of the St. John's University community.
- Coordinate non-scholarship evaluations and tryout sessions and collaborate with the compliance office, advising student-athletes on post-collegiate basketball careers, including logistics, representation, and related issues.
- Serve as the team-building contact to research and administer a year-round team building program, presenting ideas and concepts to head coach and using campus and community resources.
- Be responsible for advanced scouting of non-conference and conference opponents.
- Assist with on-court coaching during practice sessions and individual workouts with the position group.
- Work collaboratively with academic advisors to actively promote the importance of academic excellence.
- Contribute to overall game plans, media relations, inventory and purchasing, facilitating team meetings, budget management, and other administrative duties.
- Provide direct and independent coaching and supervision for student-athletes. Coaching and supervision responsibilities require making collaborative decisions regarding the student-athletes.
- Assist in developing and implementing a comprehensive recruitment plan to attract qualified prospective student-athletes for admission to St. John's University and the intercollegiate athletics program for Women's Basketball.
- Conduct evaluations, home and campus visits and text/phone calls.
- Aid and support in on-court coaching and player development.
- Develop methods to motivate student-athletes on the court and in the classroom and assist St. John's in achieving its vision and Vincentian mission while maintaining the athletic department's cultural and achievement standards.
- Establish and maintain a working knowledge of the NCAA and BIG EAST Conference rules and regulations and St. John's University policies and procedures to ensure 100% compliance throughout the calendar year for all personnel associated with the program.
- Perform duties and responsibilities and conduct themselves in a manner that reflects positively on St. John's and the Program with its student-athletes, other students, faculty, staff, and alumni, and that enhances the standing of both St. John's and the Employee in the overall community through the Employee's unique role as a model for the Program's student athletes and the substantial media attention that will be directed toward St. John's.
- Maintain a harmonious and professional working relationship with the head coach, the athletic director and his or her staff, the program's assistant coaches, coaches of other University teams, other administrative employees involved with the program, and with the Department of Athletics

Supervisory Responsibility
This position monitors the student-athletes and may additionally supervise non-coaching positions, graduate assistants, and support staff.
Work Environment
This position operates in a fast-paced professional office environment. This position requires the use of standard office equipment such as personal computers, printers, scanners, etc.
Physical Demands
While performing the duties of this job, the employee will be required to stand and perform duties on the basketball court, including but not limited to running, skills work, passing, rebounding, and shooting.
Specific vision abilities required by the employee include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, ability to adjust focus, etc.
Environmental Conditions
The Women's Basketball Office is located on the second floor of Taffner Field House. As a result, the employee must be able to walk up steps to get to their office.
This position operates in a professional office environment and is expected to represent the university on the road when traveling and at functional events.
Position Type/Expected Hours Of Work
This position is a full-time, in-person position with varying hours.
Travel
Travel is required as assigned by the Head Coach. Applicants should expect a high frequency of travel during the championship season and recruitment periods.
Required Education And Experience
- Bachelor's degree
- Coaching Experience at HS, AAU, and/or college level
- Valid Driver's license
- Background checks required
Preferred Education And Experience
- Graduate Degree (preferred)
- Four-plus years coaching as part of a women's basketball program
- Professional women's basketball experience (preferred)

In compliance with NYC's Pay Transparency Act, the annual salary range for this position is $83,600 - $130,000. St. John's University considers factors such as (but not limited to) scope and responsibilities of the position, candidate's work experience, education/training, key skills, internal peer equity, as well as market and organizational considerations when extending an offer.
This position may be relocated to any of St. John's University's physical locations at any time.
