Job description

The Assistant Coach will assist with all phases of a nationally competitive NJCAA Division II basketball program. Including, but not limited to coaching, recruiting, travel management, rules and eligibility compliance, administrative duties, departmental fundraising, game management, academic advising, marketing, promotions, and public relations.

Responsibilities
  1. Recruitment
  • Identify prospective student athletes and establish and maintain appropriate communication.
  • Conduct effective on-campus visits.
  • Demonstrate success with respect to qualified prospective student athletes.
  • Organization
    • Provide effective organization of program and management of time.
    • Perform a variety of coaching functions at all practices.
    • Understand and adhere to conference, regional, and NJCAA requirements regarding meetings, statistics, rosters, schedules, and awards.
  • Fundraising
    • Assist with active selling of booster advertising and memberships for scholarship fundraising.
    • Participate in departmental and individual sport fundraising activities/events for producing scholarship and/or team funding.
  • Advising
    • Assist with the admissions and financial aid advising process of team members.
    • Assist with monitoring academic progress and eligibility of team members, providing intervention strategies and resources when necessary.
    • Assist with the orientation of student-athletes regarding expectations, college policies, code of ethics, sportsmanship code, and local resources.
    • Assist with enforcement of college policies.
  • Public Relations
    • Establish rapport with media, including reporting scores and team statistics in a timely manner.
    • Represent the department and Iowa Western to service clubs, media, and alumni groups.
    • Collaborate with the athletic department on projects and fundraising.
    • Provide information for sports guides.
    • Work with college radio and TV broadcasting programs.
    • Coordinate with the Sports Media Coordinator on promotions, events, and social media.
    • Maintain and update sports webpages in collaboration with the SID.
  • Administrative Responsibilities
    • Ensure compliance with college, ICCAC, and NJCAA rules and regulations.
    • Organize and submit paperwork for eligibility.
    • Manage scholarship offerings and budgets.
    • Assist with team travel, accommodations, and meals.
    • Attend departmental meetings.
    • Enforce medical and insurance procedures.
    • Participate in professional development clinics.
  • Support and collaborate with other coaches and programs.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned by the Head Coach and Athletic Director.
  • Uphold IWCC’s core mission, vision, and values.
  • Qualifications
    • Exceptional knowledge of basketball.
    • Strong organizational and computer skills.
    • Effective communication abilities.
    • Ability to exercise independent judgment and initiative.
    • Sensitivity to confidential materials.
    • Ability to pass a background check.
    • Valid driver's license and good driving record to qualify for college vehicle use and CDL.
    • Bachelor’s Degree.
    Physical Requirements
    • Acceptable eyesight (with or without correction).
    • Acceptable hearing (with or without correction).
    • Effective oral and written communication skills.
    • Lifting, carrying, reaching, climbing, walking, standing, bending, and stooping.
    • Ability to set up facilities by climbing stairs, ladders, and moving moderately heavy equipment.
