Job summary

Webb County is seeking a Court Appointment Clerk to interview indigent individuals in custody during weekend magistrate proceedings and to coordinate court-appointed attorneys.

You will process front-end court appointments, determine eligibility, prepare Orders of Indigency, and route papers to magistrate, attorneys, and pretrial services. The role also requires interviews and Odyssey filing for post‑trial documentation.

Qualifications

  • Must have a high school diploma or GED from an accredited institution.
  • Must have at least two (2) years of work experience in the judiciary field.

Responsibilities

  • Process front-end court appointments of attorneys for the Magistrate Court.
  • Determine the appropriate documents to present to the Magistrate to facilitate the arrested person’s appearance before the Magistrate and determine eligibility for a court-appointed attorney.

  • Manage and monitor the Magistrate's court appointment list of attorneys.

Qualified indigent individuals shall be appointed an attorney during the weekend magistrate process and shall have indigency considered as a factor in determining reasonable bail.

Major Duties
  • Processes all front-end court appointments of attorneys for the Magistrate Court.
  • Determines the appropriate documents to present to the Magistrate to facilitate the arrested person’s appearance before the Magistrate and determine eligibility for a court-appointed attorney.
  • Answers questions in person, by email, and by telephone regarding indigent individuals in custody.
  • Prepares and routes appropriate Orders of Indigency and court appointments to the Magistrate, appointed attorneys, and pretrial services.
  • Manages and monitors the Magistrate's court appointment list of attorneys.
  • Performs related duties as required.
Knowledge, Skills, And Abilities
  • Knowledge of county and departmental policies and procedures.
  • Knowledge of legal terminology and the criminal judicial process and procedures.
  • Skill in the use of computers and Microsoft Office programs.
  • Skill in the operation of standard office equipment.
  • Ability to communicate orally and in writing in the English language and orally in the Spanish language.

Complexity/Scope of Work
  • Conducts face-to-face interviews with inmates to determine eligibility for court-appointed attorney representation.
  • Performs clerical duties, including completing and organizing documents for the Magistrate’s electronic review.
  • After court proceedings have concluded, electronically file documents in the Odyssey case management system.
Physical Demands/Work Environment

  • Driving a County vehicle or a personal vehicle for County business.

Other Requirements/Information
  • Must possess a valid and current Texas driver's license.
  • Must obtain a Notary Public bond within a reasonable time frame, provided by Webb County.
  • Drug and Alcohol Policy applies to this job. Pre-employment drug/alcohol testing, Motor Vehicle Record (MVR), and criminal background checks are required.
  • This position is not covered under Civil Service; however, all other Webb County policies apply.
  • Position is grant-funded for one (1) year unless the grant is approved for a second term by the TIDC or Webb County funds the position moving forward.
Valid Texas Driver’s License*
  • If the applicant holds an out-of-state license, a State of Texas Driver’s License must be obtained prior to employment.
