Job description

The U.S. Attorney's Office for the District of New Hampshire, located in Concord, NH, has approximately 24 AUSAs and 29 support staff. The office handles a wide range of criminal and civil matters, offering a challenging and rewarding experience for highly motivated attorneys involved in significant cases.

Position: Supervisory Assistant United States Attorney (Civil Division - Civil Chief)

The office is accepting applications for a Supervisory AUSA to serve as Civil Chief, supervising attorneys and support staff in affirmative and defensive litigation, including bankruptcy, financial litigation, and asset forfeiture matters. Candidates should have a strong background in federal and/or state civil litigation, trial experience, and management experience, preferably within a government setting.

The successful candidate will be hired as an AUSA and may serve as a Supervisory AUSA under a temporary promotion, which can be extended or reverted at the discretion of the U.S. Attorney.

Security and Residency Requirements
  • Pre-employment background checks, fingerprinting, credit and tax checks, and drug testing are required.
  • Residency within the district or within 25 miles is required.
  • Male applicants born after December 31, 1959, must register with the Selective Service System or be exempt.
Minimum Requirements
  • U.S. citizen or national.
  • J.D. degree and active bar membership in any U.S. jurisdiction.
  • At least 3 years of post-J.D. legal experience.
  • Reside within the district or within 25 miles.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills, strong interpersonal skills, good judgment, and integrity.
  • Experience in litigation, including arguing motions and federal jury trials, and supervising attorneys.
  • Leadership and managerial skills, with at least three years of lead counsel experience.
  • Demonstrated ability to work professionally with attorneys, staff, and client agencies.
Additional Information

Applicants must meet all qualification requirements by the closing date. Training for new supervisory AUSAs includes the Justice Leadership Institute or a legal management seminar. The appointment is at-will and temporary, with possible extension or reversion to non-supervisory roles.
