Job summary

12th Judicial District Attorney's Office is seeking an in-house Assistant Trial Attorney to manage the Lincoln County Magistrate Court in Carrizozo, NM. You will handle all aspects of criminal prosecution, including case review, charging decisions, plea negotiations, motion practice, and regular court appearances. The role offers frequent jury trial opportunities to strengthen trial advocacy skills.

Minimum qualifications include a J.D. and current New Mexico license to practice law.

Job description

The 12th Judicial District Attorney's Office is seeking an in-house, dedicated and motivated Assistant Trial Attorney to join our team and manage the Lincoln County Magistrate Court. This position is ideal for an attorney who thrives in a fast-paced courtroom environment and is eager to gain substantial prosecutorial and trial experience. You will handle all aspects of criminal prosecution within the Magistrate Court, including case review, charging decisions, plea negotiations, motion practice, and regular court appearances. This position provides the opportunity to participate in jury trials frequently, allowing for the development of strong trial and courtroom advocacy skills.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
This position requires basic knowledge and skills in the areas of criminal prosecution, rules of evidence and rules of criminal procedure; public relations; organization; basic computer skills; ability to draft legal documents; ability to work effectively with other criminal justice agencies; ability to communicate effectively; ability to research and analyze information and situations. This position works independently and makes decisions within guidelines which include decisions to dismiss, proceed to trial or negotiate plea agreements. Seeks guidance from assigned supervisor and/or higher-level attorneys.

Working Conditions:
Work is performed in office and courtroom environments. Physical effort and travel may be required. Incumbent may be required to work under stressful situations and/or conditions. Incumbent may be required to go to crime scenes.

Requirements: J. D. degree and current license to practice law in New Mexico.

Preferred Qualifications: Legal experience totaling up to at least one (1) year.

Salary: $90,000 /year
