The School of Social and Behavioral Sciences in the New College of Interdisciplinary Arts and Sciences at Arizona State University (ASU) invites applications for a full-time, non-tenure track Assistant Teaching Professor position in Political Science with a focus in American Politics. At ASU, teaching professors are fixed-term faculty members with responsibilities that may include teaching, service responsibilities, supervising supplemental kinds of student learning, professional development, and/or administrative duties related to teaching. Teaching professors are eligible for promotion based on criteria specified in ASU’s policy manuals and the college and school bylaws.

We are seeking applicants who have the ability to teach a range of courses on American political institutions and courses in the quantitative methods sequence. We expect the new hire to teach courses that contribute to ASU’s new general education requirement in American Institutions. This position is an in-person, academic year, benefits-eligible appointment. The anticipated start date is August 2025.

Essential Functions Of The Position

  • Teach courses in relevant areas of American Politics including topics on American political institutions, which may include Voters in America, US Foreign Policy, and others, as well as quantitative methods, and social statistics
  • Regularly monitor student progress
  • Develop and implement engaging course materials and innovative teaching strategies in both online and immersion settings
  • Collaborate with colleagues to enhance the school’s curriculum and develop additional experiential learning opportunities, such as programs for first-year, online, or transfer students
  • Provide service as appropriate for position level including participating in school, college, and university-related service, including committee work and/or community outreach efforts

Qualifications

Required Qualifications:

  • Ph.D. or terminal degree in Political Science or related field at the time of hire

Desired Qualifications

  • At least 2 years of teaching experience at four-year colleges or universities
  • Demonstrated commitment to working successfully with students from a wide variety of socio-economic and cultural backgrounds, including first-generation college students
  • Evidence of teaching effectiveness – e.g., student evaluations, syllabi, peer observation, annual evaluations, etc.
  • Demonstrated mastery of scholarship in American politics (Preference may be given to the ability to teach Arizona Politics)
  • Demonstrated knowledge of/ability to teach American institutions
  • Demonstrated knowledge of/ability to teach quantitative methods
  • Demonstrated knowledge of/ability to teach classes related to the US Southwest
  • Demonstrated knowledge of/ability to teach classes related broadly to social justice and human rights
  • Demonstrated knowledge of/ability to teach classes related to Arizona Politics

  • One writing sample – e.g. article, book chapter, dissertation chapter, or unpublished paper. This should be related to American institutions and/or quantitative methods
  • Information for three professional references (their position, title, e-mail, phone number), one reference must be from your current or most recent employer
