Job description

Assistant Teaching Professor (Lecturer) in Fisheries, Animal and Veterinary Sciences

Position location: Kingston

Position is full-time academic year, non-tenure-track, limited to 06/27/2026 with anticipated renewal.

Appointment effective time is 2025/2026 academic year.

The Department of Fisheries, Animal & Veterinary Sciences at the University of Rhode Island invites applications for a full-time, non-tenure track Assistant Teaching Professor (Lecturer) position starting in Fall 2025. This position is a one-year, renewable, 9-month (1.0 FTE) appointment with expectations for teaching, advising, and service. The position is responsible for undergraduate courses in the general areas of animal health/physiology, management and/or welfare. The successful candidate will teach existing courses that currently support the Animal and Veterinary Sciences major but will also have the opportunity to develop and offer new courses in their area of expertise that complement the existing curriculum.

Through teaching, research, and service, the Department of Fisheries, Animal and Veterinary Sciences strives to strengthen the ability of our students, faculty, and stakeholders to meet current and future local, national, and global challenges and opportunities. The approximately 350 undergraduate majors and minors in the Animal and Veterinary Sciences (AVS) program follow either a general animal science path (with interests in zoo, exotic, and companion animals; laboratory animals; or agricultural livestock) or a pre-veterinary/pre-professional path. We are specifically seeking a colleague who will demonstrate excellence in undergraduate teaching and advising and collaborate with other faculty to that end. Furthermore, we seek a colleague who shares our commitment to mentoring and supporting students and staff from diverse backgrounds and to developing more inclusive and equitable academic practices.

This is a full-time, non-tenure track, 9-month academic appointment that is 100% teaching, and consists of a typical workload of 12 credits per semester (i.e., 3-4 courses per semester). NOTE: This position has no research component as part of the workload.

BASIC FUNCTION:

The duties of the Animal Science Assistant Teaching Professor (teaching with no research component)) will include teaching undergraduate courses in the general areas of animal health, management and welfare. Specific courses include, but are not limited to animal nutrition, animal diseases, animal anatomy laboratory and animal management or welfare courses in the candidate's area of expertise. Typical enrollment for these courses is 40-100 students.
