Civil, Architectural and Environmental Engineering

Job Description

The Department of Civil, Architectural, and Environmental Engineering (CArEE) at Missouri University of Science and Technology (Missouri S&T, formerly known as the University of Missouri–Rolla) invites applications for a full-time Assistant Teaching Professor position, beginning in the Fall 2025 semester.

The selected candidate will be responsible for teaching courses in Geotechnical Engineering and other fundamental civil engineering courses, including Surveying and Mechanics of Materials. Primary duties include teaching a minimum of three courses per semester. The candidate should also be willing to contribute to departmental service activities, including leading student chapters of professional societies, mentoring senior design teams, supporting online and corporate education efforts, and participating in recruitment and outreach.

With 25 full-time faculty members, the department positively impacts society through ground-breaking research and high-quality graduate and undergraduate education, continuing a legacy of over 150 years. The department’s research awards exceeded $11 million in FY 2023. CArEE serves over 820 students across three degree programs and enjoys strong support from alumni and industry, with nine endowed professorships. Recent fundraising enabled the expansion of the Clayco Advanced Construction and Materials Laboratory, which opened in 2021. The civil engineering program is consistently ranked among the top undergraduate and graduate programs by U.S. News & World Report. Additional information about the department is available at care.mst.edu.

Qualifications

The successful candidate must hold at least a B.Sc. and M.Sc. in civil engineering or a closely related field, with demonstrated expertise in Geotechnical Engineering. Preference will be given to candidates with significant industry experience. A Ph.D. (or documented ABD status) in civil engineering with a geotechnical engineering focus is also preferred.

The candidate should have a strong academic background and scholarly credentials to teach courses in the following areas:

  • Geotechnical Engineering
  • Surveying
  • Mechanics of Materials

Licensure as a Professional Engineer (PE), or the ability to obtain PE licensure within a reasonable time frame, is strongly encouraged.

Demonstrated passion for teaching and familiarity with innovative pedagogies—including problem-based and service-based learning—will be highly valued during the evaluation process. The ideal candidate should possess excellent communication skills, the ability to develop effective course materials, and a commitment to student engagement and success.

Application Materials

Interested candidates should submit a complete application package that includes:

  • A cover letter
  • A detailed curriculum vitae (CV)
  • A teaching statement outlining areas of expertise, instructional interests, and pedagogical philosophy
  • Contact information for at least three professional references

Application Deadline

For full consideration, applications should be submitted by June 15, 2025.

Questions regarding the search may be directed to the Search Committee Chair, Dr. Magdy Abdelrahman, at m.abdelrahman@mst.edu
