Job summary

Oak Hill School invites applications for a Substitute Assistant Teacher. You will support students with diverse learning and developmental needs, working alongside Special Education Teachers and a multidisciplinary team to reinforce instruction and promote independence.

As part of our program, you will assist with personal care, participate in ongoing trainings, and help maintain a safe, inclusive classroom that respects each student’s abilities and goals.

Qualifications

• High School Diploma or GED required.
• At least 18 years old.
• Valid driver’s license for 2–3 years.
• Strong communication and teamwork skills.
• Ability to follow instructional plans and directions.
• Compassion, patience and flexibility.
• Ability to assist with mobility and personal care.

Responsibilities

• Work ~15 hours per month.
• Support students to meet IEP goals.
• Work one-on-one and in small groups.
• Foster a positive, inclusive learning environment.
• Encourage student independence with behavior plans.
• Assist with observation and documenting progress.
• Provide personal care support as needed.
• Maintain a clean, safe classroom.
• Assist during transportation and transitions.
• Collaborate with teachers, therapists, families and other professionals.
• Participate in ongoing training and obtain required certifications (V-Endorsement).

Most of our classrooms are located within community environments in Hartford, Avon, Plainville, Bristol, Portland, Hebron and Haddam Killingworth, allowing for best integration opportunities. Many of our classrooms are located in public school settings and provide students a unique integration experience. This model promotes the inclusion of Oak Hill students in the life of their school and their home communities. Some residential students live in supervised community group homes.

Our classrooms are heterogeneous, providing our students with exposure to a diverse population of students where they can learn from each other. Our programs are divided into Primary/Elementary classrooms and Secondary/Transition classrooms.

As a Substitute Assistant Teacher, you'll work alongside Special Education Teachers and a multidisciplinary team to support students with diverse learning and developmental needs. What You'll Do

As a Substitute Assistant Teacher, you will:

• Work an average of 15 hours per month
• Support students in achieving academic, social, and behavioral goals outlined in their Individualized Education Programs (IEPs).
• Work one-on-one and in small groups to reinforce classroom instruction.
• Foster a positive, inclusive, and engaging learning environment.
• Encourage student independence while implementing individualized behavior support plans.
• Assist with classroom observation and documentation of student progress.
• Provide personal care support, including toileting, feeding, dressing, lifting, transferring, and other daily living activities as needed.
• Help maintain a clean, safe, and organized classroom environment.
• Assist students during transportation and school transitions when necessary.
• Collaborate with teachers, therapists, families, and other educational professionals to promote student success.
• Participate in ongoing training and maintain required certifications, including V-Endorsement.

What We're Looking For

Minimum Qualifications

• High School Diploma or GED.
• At least 18 years of age.
• Valid driver’s license for at least two and a half to three years
• Strong communication and teamwork skills
• Ability to follow instructional plans and directions.
• Compassion, patience, flexibility, and a positive attitude.
• Ability to safely assist students with mobility and personal care needs.

Preferred Qualifications

• College coursework in Education or a related field.
• Experience working with children or individuals with disabilities.
• Experience in a classroom or educational setting.
• Knowledge of student development and behavioral support strategies.
