Summary

Working under the supervision of a teacher or principal, K-3 teacher assistants (TA) provide additional assistance and instruction to students. They assist the teacher in achieving the standards and objectives of excellence as set by Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools. They work cooperatively with the principal and teacher to create a classroom environment where students can fully benefit from instructional programs, curriculum, and technology materials. They work individually or in small groups to reinforce instruction, monitor performance, and support learning. This position also performs various instructional and classroom management tasks and clerical duties to support teachers.

• Assist children individually or in small groups to help them master assignments and reinforce learning concepts.
• Supervise students in classrooms, halls, cafeterias, school yards, gymnasiums, or on field trips.
• Enforce policies and rules governing student behavior.
• Coordinate instructional efforts with classroom teachers.
• Instruct and monitor students in the use and care of equipment and materials to prevent injuries and damage.
• Observe student performance and record relevant data to assess progress.

Education and Experience

Minimum:

• Completion of an Associate's Degree OR two years of higher education (48 credit hours) OR ability to pass a formal assessment (Workkey and 96 hours of in-service training) OR completion of the NC DOL Apprenticeship Program OR completion of the NC ATA Professional Development Plan.

Desirable:

• Associate's Degree with a concentration in Education.
• 2+ years working with elementary age children.
