Job description

Shenandoah University’s Child Care Center is accepting applications for an Assistant Teacher- Infant Room. This is a full-time benefited position located in Winchester, Virginia.

Purpose/Essential Job Function:

The Teacher Assistant supports the Teachers and the Director by helping to create a caring and safe environment for the children and assisting in activities to improve the overall care and quality of education. S/he must be able to communicate, listen, and work well with others in a team environment. Assisting the staff in implementing a quality educational program and in developing positive relationships with the children and their parents, the Teacher Assistant observes and documents children's interest and progress and relays that information back to parents and staff. Teacher Assistants are responsible for implementing developmentally appropriate activities based on children's interests and needs under the direction of the Teacher and the Director.

Key Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Maintain a safe, positive, clean, and nurturing environment for infants, young children, and their parents. Meet basic and individual needs of all children in care.
  • Follow the daily routine of each child. Document all aspects of the child's day. Implement weekly lesson plans.
  • Feed, diaper, and interact with all children. Take children outside daily.
  • Communicate with parents about their child's day. Clean and sanitize toys, cribs, and chairs.
  • Stock and maintain diapers, wipes, and ointment daily.
  • Learn and implement licensing regulations.

Required Skills:

Required knowledge, skills, and abilities:

Effective oral and written communication skills, excellent interpersonal skills, strong thinking skills, ability to focus on multi-tasks, cope with high stress levels, maintain confidentiality, must be able to lift at least 50 pounds, have physical dexterity, and the ability to reach arms above head. Must be willing to receive annually 16 in-service hours and attend staff meetings. Must be certified in Infant/Child/Adult CPR and First Aid.

Must be at least 18 years of age and have previous experience working with infants and young children in a group childcare setting.
