Job Title: Assistant Teacher -Early Childhood Program- Licensed Facility

Job Classification: Non-exempt, hourly, part-time

Summary:
The Assistant Teacher participates in all aspects of the classroom work, including managing and preparing for classroom activities and supervising children during regular class hours, supervising independent play, preparing snack, housekeeping and hand work support and duties, participation and support in story time and circle time ( singing, finger games, movement activities), helping the children to clean and tidy the classroom and child observation. Assistant Teachers participate in regular mentoring with EC Faculty and attend the first hour of faculty meetings when available.

Situated in the beautiful, sunny Sierra Nevada foothills, Sierra Waldorf School is fully accredited by AWSNA, serving approximately 127 students from Nursery through Eighth Grade. The rising first grade is approximately twelve students from a deeply dedicated parent group. We offer many rich programs, including Puppetry, Choir, Gardening, Spanish, Movement Education, and Woodworking. Our rural campus is nestled in the historic Rawhide Valley, within a short drive to Yosemite National Park, many State parks and local hiking trails. We have an experienced, dedicated faculty who share a strong commitment to mentoring and working out of Anthroposophy.

Duties/Responsibilities:

Follow the Waldorf Curriculum as directed by the Class Teacher, which may include but is not limited to the following:
Participate in classroom setup, cleaning, and preparation at the beginning of the school year. Closing down a classroom for summer.
Share in the care of the children under the Class Teacher’s direction.
Supervise children during regular class hours
Supervise independent play
Prepare snack
Maintain food lists for the Lead Assistant
Housekeeping
Handwork support and duties
Participation and support in story time and circle time
Help the children to clean and tidy the classroom
Hold rest time and closing classroom duties
Attend EC faculty mentoring for the last hour
Attend the first hour of Faculty Meetings
Attend one or more early childhood courses a year

Required Skills/abilities:
Ability to hold the rhythm of the day when asked to sub within the classroom
Familiarity with a kitchen and ability to follow recipes
Organizational skills
Professionalism- including the ability to keep adult conversations away from the children and personal phones put away while working
Strong verbal communication skills
Able to follow the lead of the teacher

Desired Skills/abilities:
Food preparation for a large group of children

Qualifications

Required Education and experience:
6 core units of early childhood education and enrolled in at least two-semester units at a college until fully qualified with 12 core units of coursework in early childhood education or child development; at least one course must be in each of the following:

  • Child, family, community, or child/family relations
  • Child/human growth and development

Experience working with children
Assistant Teacher must pass, FBI and Child Abuse Reference Check (CAIC ) Fingerprinting clearance through Live Scan

Desired Education and experience:
Waldorf Early Childhood Training
Background in Anthroposophy

While carrying out the responsibilities of this position, employees are regularly required to monitor and communicate with children and coworkers. This often involves standing, sitting, walking, and using hands and fingers. Occasionally, employees may need to climb, balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. Additionally, they may need to lift and move items weighing up to 50 lbs.

Work will take place both outdoors and in a classroom setting, which may frequently be noisy. Employees may also be exposed to bacterial contamination.

Time, weeks/year
This position runs for the duration of the school year, (end of August through mid-June) excluding seasonal breaks and holidays, 30-36 hours per week including time for mentoring.

Compensation and Benefits
Base wage $16.50 – $20 per hour
Possible 50% remission
