Job summary

Atlas Public Schools is hiring an Assistant Teacher to support the Lead Teacher in delivering instruction and maintaining a joyful, rigorous, and safe classroom environment. The role includes supervising students during non-instructional times, assisting with intersession programming, and collaborating with families and staff to support student success.

Requirements include a high school diploma (associate’s or bachelor’s preferred) and a substitute teaching certificate; experience with children

Job description

The Assistant Teacher supports the Lead Teacher in creating a joyful, rigorous, and safe learning environment for all students. Assistant Teachers play a vital role in ensuring classrooms run smoothly, students receive individualized support, and the broader school community functions effectively. This role includes supporting instruction during the school day, supervising students during non-instructional times, and assisting with intersession programming as needed.

Key Responsibilities
  1. Support the Lead Teacher with daily classroom instruction in small-group, whole-group, and individualized learning settings.
  2. Reinforce academic skills and learning goals through guided practice, intervention support, and enrichment activities.
  3. Provide supervision and active engagement with students during lunch, recess, arrival, dismissal, and other non-instructional times.
  4. Maintain a positive, structured, and safe classroom environment aligned with Atlas culture and behavior expectations.
  5. Assist with classroom preparation, materials organization, bulletin boards, and learning space upkeep.
  6. Monitor student progress and communicate observations to the Lead Teacher and grade-level team.
  7. Support students with social-emotional development, conflict resolution, and positive peer interactions.
  8. Occasionally provide classroom coverage and facilitate instruction when the Lead Teacher is absent or temporarily unavailable.
  9. Collaborate with teachers, staff, and families to support student success and schoolwide initiatives.
  10. Follow all Atlas policies, procedures, and safety protocols at all times.
  11. Participate in professional development, coaching, and team meetings as assigned.
Qualifications
  • High school diploma required; associate’s or bachelor’s degree preferred
  • Experience working with children in a school or youth setting strongly preferred
  • Sub certificate required

Work Schedule

Assistant Teachers are full-time, school-year employees. Typical hours are 7:45 a.m. - 3:45 p.m., Monday through Friday, with occasional adjustments for school events, intersession programming, or coverage needs.

  • Ability to actively supervise and engage with students throughout the school day
  • Standing, walking, lifting classroom materials, and working indoors and outdoors as needed

In order to teach at Atlas Public Schools, you must:
  • Pass a background check and complete the Family Care Safety Registry.
  • Hold a Bachelor’s Degree or have substantial experience working with elementary students in a formal setting along with a substitute teaching certificate.
  • Demonstrate eligibility to work in the United States.
