At Chicago Commons, we embrace a Reggio-Inspired approach to learning, fostering a collaborative environment where children, families, and teachers work together to promote critical thinking and creativity. Our early childhood program serves at-risk communities including West Humboldt Park, Pilsen, Bronzeville, and New City/Back of the Yards, addressing high poverty and limited resources.

Position Summary: The assistant teacher supports the lead teacher in creating a safe, nurturing, and engaging classroom environment that promotes growth and development for children.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities:

  1. Partner with the lead teacher to develop a welcoming learning environment for children and families.
  2. Assist in planning, implementing, and evaluating developmentally appropriate activities across various domains.
  3. Supervise and interact with children during activities.
  4. Build strong partnerships with families.
  5. Take responsibility for the classroom in the absence of the lead teacher.
  6. Participate in home visits, parent-teacher conferences, and reviews as needed.
  7. Assist with classroom setup, supply ordering, and maintaining developmental reports.
  8. Attend parent meetings, training, and team meetings.
  9. Support the implementation of the Reggio Emilia Philosophy.
  10. Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

  • Associate Degree in Early Childhood Education or Child Development, or 60 college credits with at least 15 in early childhood or child development.
  • At least one year of experience in an early learning setting preferred.
  • Proficient in reading and writing English; capable of operating word-processing systems.
  • Physical ability to lift up to 40 pounds and engage in active movement.
