Job summary

Douglass Community Services, Inc. is seeking an Assistant Teacher to support a Head Start classroom and work with the Lead Teacher to foster children’s physical, social, emotional, and cognitive growth. The role emphasizes safety, nurturing, and engaging activities.

You will assist with lesson planning, documentation, and daily routines, while building positive relationships with children and families. Benefits include health, dental, vision, life insurance, and retirement options.

Qualifications

  • High School Diploma or GED required.
  • Must enroll in a CDA credential program within 2 years of hire.
  • CPR and First Aid certification required or ability to obtain.
  • Basic computer skills including word processing and data entry.
  • Strong communication skills (written and verbal).
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and build positive relationships with children and families.
  • Ability to work collaboratively in a team environment with initiative and sound judgment.
  • Genuine enthusiasm for working with young children in an early learning setting.

Responsibilities

  • Support a safe, nurturing, and engaging classroom environment that promotes children's physical, social, emotional, and cognitive development.
  • Assist the Lead Teacher with lesson planning, curriculum implementation, documentation, and daily classroom activities.
  • Provide positive guidance and build strong relationships that support children’s learning and family engagement.
  • Prepare classroom materials and maintain routines that support healthy habits, including nutrition and self-care practices.
  • Serve as Lead Teacher in their absence, helping coordinate and manage daily classroom operations.
  • Maintain communication with families and staff while ensuring confidentiality, completing required trainings, and following mandated reporting responsibilities.
