Oak Hill is seeking a highly motivated and dynamic Assistant Teacher I (ATI) to provide hands-on classroom support to individuals with Developmental and other Disabilities. This role involves inspiring others, making a life-changing impact, and achieving professional growth and personal fulfillment. Oak Hill partners with people with disabilities to provide services promoting independence, education, health, and dignity. The position aims to help expand Oak Hill’s ability to meet diverse community needs. Oak Hill is committed to empowering staff through professional development, tuition reimbursement, and career pathways.

The Assistant Teacher at Oak Hill’s Hartford Classroom works 35 hours/week, Monday through Friday 8a-3p. The AT supports Special Education Teachers by preparing lessons, teaching students, and providing direct support. Responsibilities include assisting with behavior management, tracking student behavior, and setting up classroom materials. Applicants with no experience interested in education or direct care, or those seeking a career change, are encouraged to apply.

Minimum Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED
  • At least age 18
  • Valid driver’s license
  • A Public Service license with a V endorsement is required during initial employment, facilitated through Oak Hill. The V endorsement is necessary for operating transportation vehicles for students, including those transporting special education students. Applicants or holders of a public passenger endorsement must have an acceptable driving record.

This is a union position paying $18.50/hour.

Responsibilities

  • Assist students in achieving social and academic development
  • Reinforce lessons through one-on-one and small group review
  • Foster student engagement and create a supportive learning environment
  • Model appropriate social behaviors
  • Encourage independence and implement behavioral plans
  • Help students with self-care tasks
  • Observe and document student progress
  • Maintain records for student progress and program development
  • Prepare materials and supervise students during lunch, breaks, and field trips
  • Transport students on field trips
  • Assist students with learning concepts and support engagement
