Job summary

Lemhi County is seeking a qualified individual to assist the Road and Bridge Supervisor in managing daily activities and staff of the Road and Bridge Department. Work is performed in office and field environments, requiring readiness for adverse weather and heavy equipment operation.

The role includes on-call response as needed. Responsibilities include supervising field maintenance, training staff, inspecting roads and structures, and maintaining logs and records.

Qualifications

  • Knowledge of road, bridge, and right-of-way maintenance and construction methods.
  • Knowledge of snow removal, sanding, and deicing procedures.
  • Experience operating heavy construction equipment.
  • Ability to supervise field staff and work under supervision.

Responsibilities

Purpose Of Class/Primary Function

The primary function of an employee in this class is to assist the Road and Bridge Supervisor in the management and supervision of daily activities and staff of the Road and Bridge Department. Work is performed under the direct supervision of the Road and Bridge Supervisor. Supervision is exercised over subordinate staff in the field or in the absence of the Supervisor. The principal duties of this class are performed in an office and field environment and may include working in adverse weather conditions and hazards involving the use of heavy equipment and power tools. This job is also on-call to respond as needed.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • Assists in the daily and long-term operations of Road and Bridge,
  • Performs field supervision of road and bridge maintenance and construction projects, stormwater runoff and erosion projects, snow removal and other operations;
  • Trains employees and administers the department safety program to ensure work is conducted in a safe manner;
  • Assists with projects performed for other county departments or other agencies;
  • Inspects roads, bridges, dykes, levees, rights-of-way, and related County property to determine conditions and maintenance required;
  • Responds to and resolves public complaints, inquiries, information requests, and suggestions;
  • Investigates accidents and damage claims involving Department projects, equipment, and/or employees;
  • Performs the duties of Equipment Operator as needed;
  • Performs scheduled and assigned maintenance, repair, and service work on County roads, bridges, rights-of-ways, medians, and structures;
  • Operates a variety of vehicles and heavy equipment, including but not limited to, grader, bulldozer, front-end loader and attachments, backhoe, power broom mower, boom truck, water tanker, roller, dump truck, asphalt patching truck, road sander, chip spreader, equipment hauler, snow removal vehicles, and related equipment;
  • Operates a variety of hand tools and power tools, including but not limited to sledges, hammers, picks, air compressors, welders, chainsaws, groundskeeping equipment, air hammers, jacks, and related equipment;
  • Prepares and maintains required work logs, reports, and records.
Other Duties and Responsibilities
  • On-call after regular hours to respond to emergency situations;
  • Performs Other Related Duties As Required.

  • Performs exceptional customer service, answering correspondence and responding to telephone calls and e-mails in a courteous and timely manner; prepares and generates reports as needed;
  • Communicates and coordinates regularly with appropriate others to maximize the effectiveness and efficiency of interdepartmental operations and activities;
  • Works cooperatively wit all County departments and fills in or cross-trains with other positions as necessary;
  • Performs all work duties and activities in accordance with County policies, procedures, and safety practices.

  • Knowledge of: Methods, materials, procedures, and standard practices of road, bridge, and right-of-way maintenance and construction, stormwater runoff and erosion control, vegetation control and removal, and related duties;
  • Methods, materials, procedures, and standard practices of road, bridge, and right-of-way construction and repair, including concrete and asphalt repair, removal, and replacement;
  • Methods, materials, procedures, and standard practices of snow removal, sanding, and deicing;
  • Heavy and construction equipment operation and maintenance;
