Job summary

Boston Medical Center seeks an Assistant Supervisor in Laboratory Administration for South Boston/Upham’s Corner Health Centers. The role supports the supervisor in instituting new instruments, testing methods, and staff training, while maintaining SOPs and quality control manuals.

You will help document annual staff reviews and promote departmental productivity. The position requires a bachelor’s degree in medical technology or related field, with ASCP/NCA or equivalent certification preferred.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree as specified incl. supervised clinical internship or degree in an applied science.
  • ASCP/NCA or equivalent certification preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Assist supervisor in implementing new instruments, methodologies and tests.
  • Assist supervisor in training staff in new methodologies.
  • Maintain policies, procedures, SOPs, and QC manuals per regulatory agencies.
  • Facilitate documentation of annual staff reviews.
  • Provide leadership to promote flexibility and productivity.
  • Ensure smooth operations with minimal supervision.

Education

Bachelor’s degree in Medical Technology or Clinical Laboratory Science
Applied science degree (Chemistry, Biology, Biochemistry)
Analytic abilities to perform and review highly complex testing
Manual/visual dexterity for specimen prep
Interpersonal skills for leadership
Venipuncture proficiency

Job description

Position Summary

Under the general direction of the Technical Supervisor, provides leadership in administrative and technical functions for an area of responsibility to assist in the fulfillment of the department’s mission. Position: Assistant Supervisor; Department: Laboratory Administration, South Boston and Upham’s Corner Health Centers; Schedule: 40 Hours.

Essential Responsibilities / Duties
  • Assist supervisor in implementing new instruments, methodologies, and tests to enhance laboratory operations.
  • Assist supervisor in training staff in new methodologies.
  • Assist supervisor in maintaining the Policy, Procedure, Standard Operating, and Quality Control Manuals in compliance with all regulatory agencies.
  • Facilitate documentation of annual staff reviews.
  • Provide leadership in promoting staff flexibility to accept changes of duty, situation, and/or schedule to enhance productivity of the department.
  • Ensure smooth and efficient operations of the department with a minimum of direction from the supervisor.
Education and Certification Requirements
  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited university or college in Medical Technology or Clinical Laboratory Science that includes a successful completion of a supervised clinical internship in an approved hospital laboratory; or a Bachelor’s degree in an applied science (Chemistry, Biology, Biochemistry).
  • Certification by American Society of Clinical Pathologists (ASCP), National Credentialing Agency (NCA), or an equivalent agency as a Medical Technologist, Clinical Laboratory Scientist, Medical Laboratory Technician, or specialty certification is preferred. Equivalent agencies include, but are not limited to, ASCP, NCA, American Medical Technologists (AMT), American Association of Bioanalysts (AAB), Health Education and Welfare (HEW), and American Society of Microbiologists (AMT).
Experience
  • Minimum of 2 years’ experience in a specific area of charge or generalist experience. For Blood Bank, 3 years of experience in Blood Bank is required.
Knowledge and Skills
  • Analytic abilities to perform and review highly complex testing as defined under CLIA '88, interpret findings, perform calculations, calibrate instruments, and assist in developing sound policies and procedures.
  • Manual/visual dexterity necessary to prepare specimens, prepare solutions, screen specimens, and operate a computer software system.
  • Interpersonal skills sufficient to maintain effective contacts with physicians and patient care areas, and to provide effective leadership for personnel as assigned.
  • Proficiency in venipuncture techniques.
Compensation and Benefits

Compensation Range: $53,000.00 – $77,000.00. This range offers an estimate based on the minimum job qualifications. Compensation may be influenced by education, experience, skills, certifications/licensures, business/organizational needs, internal equity, and market competitiveness.
