Job description

Golf Business Network is partnering with Talbot Country Club on the search for an Assistant Golf Course Superintendent. Founded in 1910, Talbot is Maryland’s fourth-oldest club. It’s a full-service private club on the Eastern Shore with a championship 18-hole course, a large practice facility, a pool, a dock and tennis.

Why this role stands out
  • Hands-on renovation: Talbot is several years into a long-range master plan with architect Joel Weiman, and the maintenance team does roughly 80% of the construction in-house. You’ll do shaping, grading, drainage and grow-in, and you’ll get time on skid steers and mini excavators.
  • A new irrigation system: The Club is in early planning for a full irrigation replacement. You’ll be part of design review, bidding and construction planning.
  • Exposure to running an operation: You’ll get involved in budgeting, purchasing, contractor coordination and green committee meetings, with a superintendent who wants to share that side of the job.
  • A year-round crew: About 75% of the staff is full time, so you’ll get to know the team in the off season, before play picks up.
  • Equipment and technology: The department has GPS sprayers, robotic mowers and a brand new maintenance facility. The fleet is also moving to a regular replacement cycle.
What you’ll do
  • Lead daily crew organization, assignments, training and follow-up on work quality, alongside the Superintendent and a fellow Assistant
  • Set up the course for daily play, shotguns, tournaments and events
  • Manage moisture and hand watering, and help with agronomic decisions on cool- and warm-season turf
  • Operate, troubleshoot and repair the irrigation system
  • Calibrate equipment, apply fertilizers, pesticides and PGRs, and keep the required records
  • Work with the Superintendent, architect and contractors on construction projects
Who Talbot is looking for

Crew management is the top priority for this role. The right person is confident, firm but fair, and leads by example. They also hold everyone to the same standard, including long-tenured staff. Turf knowledge matters, but leadership and attention to detail matter more, and private club experience isn’t required.

  • Supervisory experience, including training and accountability
  • Ability to work with a Spanish-speaking crew
  • Pesticide and fertilizer application experience
  • A Maryland applicator license, or the ability to get one within 120 days
  • Solid irrigation and moisture management knowledge, ideally in the transition zone
  • A degree or certificate in turfgrass management or a related field is preferred, though significant experience will also be considered
  • A goal of becoming a superintendent one day
Compensation and benefits
  • $60,000 to $80,000, based on experience and leadership ability
  • Medical and dental, paid vacation, and a 401(k) after one year
  • National and local association dues, plus support for continuing education and certifications
  • Golf privileges, employee meals and uniforms
The location

Easton sits on Maryland’s Eastern Shore, with more than 600 miles of Chesapeake Bay shoreline in Talbot County. There’s great hunting, fishing and boating, and Baltimore and D.C. are about 90 minutes away.
