This position is responsible for proficiency in all areas of a retail operation. The position serves as the second in charge of operations to the Store Manager. Duties include providing leadership and direction to the store team, ensuring a positive customer shopping experience, and performing operational activities throughout the store with appropriate guidance to Team Members. This role also involves promoting a safe and productive work environment for all Team Members, customers, and vendors, as well as training Team Members on policies and procedures.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities (Min 5%)

It is essential that you be available, flexible, adaptable, and service-oriented, as you must be able to fulfill all of the following requirements:

  • Maintain regular and predictable attendance.
  • Work scheduled shifts and have the ability to work varied hours, including days, nights, weekends, and overtime as needed.
  • Uphold and promote a safe and productive work environment by following policies and procedures.
  • Support selling initiatives (TEAM):
    • Thank the Customer
    • Engage with the customer and/or pet
    • Advise on products or services
    • Make the experience Memorable
  • This position is required to perform a combination of duties during 95% of their day, including but not limited to:
  • Assist Store Manager in store operations, including driving sales and profit, customer loyalty, planning, prioritization, and delegating tasks.
  • Support Store Manager in Team Member counseling, hiring/staffing, scheduling, training, and maintaining a productive environment.
  • Execute merchandising activities, including promotional and seasonal displays.
  • Perform opening and closing procedures.
  • Transport and deposit cash to the bank.
  • Assess store conditions and assign duties accordingly.
  • Organize and prioritize workflow using the daily planner.
  • Recover merchandise and participate in freight processing.
  • Implement price changes and resolve customer issues to ensure positive experiences.
  • Adhere to loss prevention standards and respond to alarms.
  • Communicate job responsibilities and financial goals with team members.
  • Operate cash registers and supervise cash handling.
  • Assist team members with policy and procedure application.
  • Ensure the safety and care of live animals, including sanitizing tanks and maintaining their environment.
  • Complete documentation related to duties.

May perform other duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications

Experience: Retail leadership experience is required; pet/live animal knowledge is preferred. Supervisory experience is also preferred. Must be at least 18 years old with a valid driver’s license.

Education: High school diploma or equivalent preferred, but not required. Ability to read, write, and count accurately is necessary regardless of education level.

Preferred knowledge, skills, or abilities
  • Ability to perform all Team Member responsibilities.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and conflict resolution abilities.
  • Basic computer skills.
  • Pet and live animal knowledge is highly preferred.
Working Conditions
  • Work environment is generally indoor with moderate noise.
  • Shifts vary but are generally no less than 4 hours and may exceed 8 hours.
  • Adhere to safety guidelines and promote a safe environment.
Physical Requirements
  • Frequently lift or reach merchandise overhead.
  • Stand, kneel, twist, crouch, squat, bend, and climb ladders regularly.
  • Move throughout the store during shifts.
  • Operate store equipment safely and effectively.
  • Read, write, and count accurately for documentation.
  • Complete all required training and certifications.
  • Travel and drive as needed for district support.
  • This position is non-sedentary and requires physical stamina.
