Position Purpose

Assistant Store Managers in Training learn the responsibilities and functions of several roles – Assistant Store Manager, Operations Assistant Store Manager, Night Operations Assistant Store Manager, and Specialty Assistant Store Manager. They support the Store Manager in developing strategies and objectives to drive sales and profitability, and learn to achieve these objectives through effective leadership and communication with Associates.

Key Responsibilities

• General Customer Service Initiatives: supervise Associates in the selling effort, ensure the store’s in‑stock position, and maintain an appealing and organized store appearance. Tactics include staffing and scheduling, resolving stock deficiencies, coaching selling behaviors, handling customer issues, and supporting service needs for both installed sales/special orders and product sales.
• Supervising Store Associates: interview, hire, motivate, coach, train, develop, and communicate with associates. Includes performance management, semi‑annual reviews, and execution of the disciplinary process when necessary.
• Operations Management: oversee front‑end processes (sales and returns), special services, and lot support; and back‑end processes (receiving, freight, stocking). Manage daily financial operations, maintain store equipment and systems, and master store standard operating procedures (SOPs), especially those related to safety compliance.
• Business Analysis & Merchandise Planning Initiatives: drive department profitability through sales trend analysis, collaborate with key partners to plan merchandise placement and signing, and support stock integrity via inventory management processes.

Direct Manager / Direct Reports

• ASM in Training reports to a Store Manager. Upon completion of training, they will gradually assume supervisory accountability for associate work activities.

Travel Requirements

• Typical overnight travel less than 10% of the time.

Physical Requirements

• Mostly seated; occasional movement or lifting of light items.

Working Conditions

• Comfortable indoor area; rare unpleasant conditions that are not objectionable.
