Job description

The Assistant Store Manager partners with the Store Manager to coach the store team to provide care and expertise and create memorable moments for every Devoted Pet Lover. The position shares the responsibility for ensuring consistently great execution to allow us to invest in meaningful time with our customers and provide the best products and services that create the healthiest, most playful life for their pets. They take actions to drive profit that fuels our growth and future success as the best choice for people who are devoted to their pets. They look for moments of fun in every day and celebrate them and they live by and coach to our Core Beliefs.

Essential Details and Responsibilities :

  • Support the execution of sales, service, and customer experience initiatives in store.
  • Assist in driving results to achieve Sales, KPIs and Store Performance goals.
  • Partner with the Store Manager to plan and execute community events and develop mutually beneficial business relationships with various rescue agencies.
  • Partner with the Store Manager to coordinate the recruitment and hiring of Animal Care Experts (ACEs).
  • Support the day-to-day assignment of tasks while training and developing ACEs for future success within Pet Retail Brands.
  • Assist the Store Manager with order placements, maintaining appropriate inventory, floor moves, merchandising, display maintenance, housekeeping and miscellaneous paperwork.
  • Support the completion of the store's Health & Safety audits.
  • Protect employees and customers by maintaining a safe and clean store environment.
  • May be required to maintain cleanliness and well-being of all livestock including animal care and feeding.

Experience, Education, Certifications :

  • At least 3+ years in retail environment
  • Working knowledge of POS system
  • Demonstrated interpersonal & sales skills

  • Issues relatively uncomplex and not difficult. Relies on internal policies and procedures to work through a problem.
  • Ex. Merchandising according to planogram, how to handle a returned item, dealing with a disgruntled customer, responding to an injured employee, etc.

  • Assignments are received in objective focused terms. Receives guidance based on organizational goals and company policies.
  • Ex. Required to use creative thought for tasks such as when supporting the planning and execution of store events, what products to suggest to help a sick pet.

Responsibility Factor : Impact of Action Can directly impact the sales of the store, whether a customer will return, the reputation of the brand, employee morale, and inventory shrinkage.

  • Accomplishes results through a local team and with remote head office and warehouse staff. Required to build relationships with 3rd parties such as customers, local government, vendors, shelters, rescues, etc.
  • Communication may be confrontational in nature with customers and employees

  • Aid in the creation of work schedules and event planning, but is not held accountable to them.

Effort Factor : Physical Demands

  • Several duties require physical exertion and dexterity. Fine dexterity for typing and handling of cash required on consistent basis. Heavy lifting up to 55lbs required several times throughout a shift. Able to seek relief intermittently throughout the shift.

Effort Factor : Sensory Demands

  • Majority of tasks do not require long periods of mental concentration. One notable exception would be inventory ordering.
  • Active listening required when speaking with customers and employees
  • Active observation required when merchandising the store

Working Conditions Factor : Environment

  • Works in a relatively temperature-stable environment with little requirement for overtime. May sometimes work alone. May be exposed to infestations and other illnesses / diseases from livestock.
  • Verbal abuse by customers and accidental injuries from pets are possible.
  • Common injuries are slips / trips / falls and strains / sprains due to lifting
