General Function

The Assistant Store Director supports the overall operations of the store, ensuring efficient, profitable, and customer-focused performance. This role is responsible for driving sales and profitability, providing leadership and guidance to department managers and employees, and upholding high standards of customer service, safety, and compliance with company policies and regulations. Responsible for perpetuating the fundamental values of the Hy-Vee culture, including honesty, integrity, friendliness, caring, sincerity, respect, and high ethics. Helps the company improve and grow through ownership.

Reporting Relations

Accountable and reports to: Regional Vice President; Store Director

Positions that report to you: All store employees

Primary Duties and Responsibilities
  • Lead and manage all store employees, including hiring, training, performance evaluation, and team development.
  • Create a positive environment that fosters employee morale, friendliness, and fun.
  • Provide prompt, efficient, and friendly customer service, exhibiting caring, concern, and patience in all interactions.
  • Set store standards for customer service, employee relations, cleanliness, sanitation, appearance, and profitability.
  • Monitor financial performance, including sales, labor, and inventory metrics, to meet profitability goals.
  • Prepare and analyze reports on sales, shrink, and operational performance, identifying areas for improvement.
  • Collaborate with the Store Director on strategies for growth and efficiency.
  • Participate in recruiting, hiring, orientation, and training of store employees, reflecting community diversity.
  • Greet customers with a friendly smile and learn their names when possible.
  • Assist customers by escorting, securing products, loading heavy items, noting suggestions, and enhancing the shopping experience.
  • Balance customer service and labor costs appropriately.
  • Foster a positive, inclusive, and results-driven work environment.
  • Support pricing, merchandising, and departmental goals.
  • Assist in developing advertising plans and monitor consumer trends and competitor pricing.
  • Manage inventory processes and represent the company positively in the community.
  • Ensure store procedures for safeguarding assets are followed and comply with policies and laws.
  • Report to work as scheduled and work the expected hours.
Secondary Duties and Responsibilities
  • Pursue educational opportunities for self and employees.
  • Assist in all store areas as needed and perform other duties as required.
Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, and Worker Characteristics
  • Ability to solve problems using logical/scientific thinking and handle abstract variables.
  • Proficiency in arithmetic, algebra, and geometry.
  • Ability to report, write, present, and evaluate technical data and articles.
Education and Experience

High School diploma or equivalent, plus Dale Carnegie and perimeter department training. Over five years of related managerial experience.

Supervisory Responsibilities
  • Instruct, assign, review, and coordinate work of others, including hiring, employee issues, and recommendations for transfers, promotions, discipline, and salaries.
Physical Requirements
  • Ability to perform light work, exerting up to 20 pounds frequently.
  • Visual requirements include vision from less than 20 inches to more than 20 feet, with or without correction, plus depth perception, color vision, and field of vision.
  • Physical activities include climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, reaching, standing, walking, pulling, lifting, grasping, feeling, talking, hearing, and repetitive motions.
Working Conditions

Exposure to dust, noise, temperature extremes, equipment hazards, electrical shocks, and chemicals. Fast-paced environment.

Equipment Used

Box cutter, cash registers, knives, trash and cardboard compactors, computer, calculator, telephone, FAX, register system, company vehicles, copier, and power equipment.

Financial Responsibility

Authorized to donate merchandise, recommend monetary donations, purchase merchandise, and approve operating expenses within company policy.

Contacts

Daily contact with customers, employees, vendors, and the public. Occasional contact with regulatory agencies.

Confidentiality

Access to confidential information including sales, profit/loss, wages, and employee files.
