Job summary

Greater Austin YMCA is seeking an Assistant Site Lead for its licensed afterschool program serving children ages 4-12. This seasonal, part-time role runs with the school year, primarily weekday afternoons, and includes acting Site Director duties when the Site Lead is unavailable.

You will support daily operations, guide Youth Development Leaders, supervise 12–17 youths, coordinate curriculum and family communications, and ensure Texas licensing standards are met across Austin and nearby

Qualifications

  • Must be at least 21 years of age with a high school diploma or equivalent.
  • Availability to work Monday through Friday from 2:00 PM to 6:30 PM, with occasional evenings and weekends for events and trainings.
  • Must meet or be willing to obtain Texas Child Care Licensing requirements: At least 30 hours of training in child or youth development, recreational leadership, or management; candidates with a minimum of 15 hours are eligible but must complete the remaining hours within 90 days (training provided).
  • Minimum of 6 months of experience in a licensed childcare setting, or equivalent coursework in child development.
  • Valid driver's license, reliable transportation, and ability to pass a background check.
  • Current First Aid/CPR certification, or willingness to obtain (training provided).

Responsibilities

  • Assist the Site Lead in managing daily program operations, ensuring a safe, organized, and engaging environment.
  • Help guide and support Youth Development Leaders, fostering a collaborative, positive, and growth-focused team culture.
  • Step into full site leadership responsibilities in the absence of the Site Lead, ensuring compliance, safety, and program continuity.
  • Supervise a group of 12--17 youth while supporting overall site ratios and active supervision.
  • Deliver and support curriculum including enrichment activities, academic support, creative projects, and physical activity.
  • Build relationships with families and assist in communication, including planning and hosting family nights and events.
  • Occasional travel between sites and YMCA locations is needed, including weekly pickup and drop-off of supplies and paperwork, attending meetings and trainings, and providing support at other program locations as assigned.
  • Always Ensure adherence to Texas Child Care Licensing standards and YMCA policies.
  • Assist with attendance, incident reports, behavior documentation, and other required records while maintaining confidentiality.
  • Support resolution of daily challenges such as behavior concerns, transitions, late pickups, and staffing needs with professionalism.
  • Model the YMCA's mission, vision, and values in all interactions.
  • Represent and share the impact of YMCA programs with families and the community.
  • Complete other duties as assigned to support program success.

This role also serves as the acting Site Director when the Site Lead is off-site, ensuring continuity in leadership, licensing compliance, and program quality. Each afternoon, you play a critical role in bringing the Y's mission to life, creating a space where every child feels safe, supported, and inspired. This part-time role is primarily scheduled on weekday afternoons at elementary school sites across Austin and nearby communities, with occasional weekend availability for trainings and special events.

What You Bring To The Y

Physical Requirements
This role requires the ability to actively supervise and engage with children throughout the program day. The Assistant Site Lead must be able to stand, walk, and move around the site for extended periods, participate in physical activities such as games and outdoor play, and lift or carry materials and supplies up to 25--35 pounds. The role also requires bending, kneeling, and stretching to support students, maintain safe and organized spaces, and respond quickly to the needs of the program. Clear communication with staff, students, parents, and school personnel is essential, along with maintaining awareness of the environment to ensure safety at all times. This position requires the ability to work both indoors and outdoors and involves exposure to communicable diseases and common childhood illnesses.
