Job description

The Cooperative Institute for Marine and Atmospheric Studies (CIMAS) of the University of Miami (UM) invites applications for an Assistant Scientist position that involves validation and improvement of numerical model forecasts from the Hurricane Analysis and Forecast System (HAFS), through improvements to data assimilation and large-scale nudging techniques. He or she will also be responsible for analyzing and interpreting the results, for presenting findings at scientific meetings and for publishing the results in scientific journals.

The work will be done in close collaboration with scientists in the Hurricane Research Division (HRD) at the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's (NOAA) Atmospheric Oceanographic and Meteorological Laboratory (AOML).

Applicants must have a Ph.D. in Atmospheric Science or in a related field and at least one year of relevant post-doctoral experience. The successful candidate should have experience with one or more of the following: performing data assimilation for tropical cyclones, analysis of tropical cyclone numerical model output, and analysis of tropical cyclone observational data. Strong programming and scientific communication skills are required. Experience and familiarity with AI model output would be helpful. Finally, familiarity with the areas of research commensurate with the general activities at NOAA’s Hurricane Research Division at AOML would be particularly valuable.

A current CV, a statement of interest, and the names of 3 people who can provide letters of recommendation are required.
