Job summary

Holder Construction is seeking an Assistant Safety Director to join our Safety team on projects across Herndon, Sterling, Culpeper, Manassas, Ashburn, and Richmond in Virginia. You will lead safety planning, support project teams, and mentor Safety Coordinators to ensure safe execution on complex construction projects.

The role requires OSHA 30 (OSHA 500 preferred), BCSP certification (ASP/CSP/CHST) or in progress, and demonstrated leadership in high-risk activities.

Qualifications

  • OSHA 30 required; OSHA 500 preferred.
  • BCSP certification (ASP, CSP, or CHST) required or in progress.
  • Strong leadership, communication, and organizational skills.
  • Demonstrated experience supporting high-risk construction activities (crane & rigging, LOTO, etc.).
  • Proven ability to lead safety efforts on large or complex construction projects.

Responsibilities

  • Lead safety planning and execution in alignment with project leadership and operational goals.
  • Partner with project managers and superintendents to integrate safety into planning and execution.
  • Develop, coach, and mentor Safety Coordinators and Senior Safety Coordinators; ensure program consistency.
  • Lead high-risk activity planning (cranes, LOTO, lifts) with focus on SIF risk mitigation.
  • Apply Energy-Based Safety principles in planning and field execution.
  • Review JHAs, MOPs, lift plans, and energy-control procedures for hazard control.
  • Lead incident investigations and corrective actions to prevent recurrence of high-risk events.
  • Support preconstruction to identify and mitigate risk for high-risk activities.
  • Build relationships with project teams, trade partners, and clients.
  • Support staffing and performance of safety personnel.

Position Summary

We are looking for an Assistant Safety Director to join our Safety team on our projects in Herndon, VA., Sterling, VA., Culpeper, VA., Manassas VA., Ashburn, VA., and Richmond, VA. The Assistant Safety Director provides leadership for safety planning, execution, and team development on complex construction projects. This role blends people leadership with strong technical capability, supporting project teams in integrating safety into planning and field execution. The Assistant Safety Director is expected to operate with increasing independence and is progressing toward subject matter expertise in high-risk activities.

Key Responsibilities
  • Lead safety planning and execution in alignment with project leadership and operational goals
  • Partner closely with project managers and superintendents to proactively integrate safety into project planning and execution
  • Develop, coach, and mentor Safety Coordinators and Senior Safety Coordinators Ensure consistent implementation of Holder safety programs, processes, and expectations
  • Lead planning, review, and execution of high-risk activities (e.g., crane & rigging, energy isolation/LOTO, critical lifts, work at height, etc.), with a focus on Serious Injury and Fatality (SIF) risk identification and mitigation
  • Apply and reinforce Energy-Based Safety principles (HECA, energy wheel, energy control) in planning and field execution to proactively manage exposure to high-risk energy sources
  • Review and provide guidance on critical JHAs, MOPs, lift plans, and energy control procedures to ensure effective hazard identification and control strategies
  • Lead incident investigations, root cause analysis, and corrective action implementation, with emphasis on identifying systemic gaps and preventing recurrence of high-consequence events
  • Support preconstruction and work planning efforts to identify, assess, and mitigate risk prior to execution, particularly for high-risk and SIF-potential activities
  • Build and maintain strong relationships with project teams, trade partners, and clients
  • Support staffing, development, and performance of safety personnel
