Qualifications

  • Associate's degree in an applicable area of Engineering Technology or Survey Technology from an accredited institution.
  • Seven years of progressive technician experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Experience applying engineering concepts to solve complex problems.

Responsibilities

  • Support the Division 11/District 2 Construction Unit.
  • Perform advanced technical work in highway construction, inspection, survey, and traffic control.
  • Conduct complex inspections of roadway and structure construction processes and materials.
  • Serve as Chief Inspector and supervise lower-level inspectors onsite.
  • Direct and supervise survey crews as a survey crew leader.
  • Review and process final estimates and compute pro-rata time extensions and contract beginning dates.
  • Check pay record book quantities and review as-built construction plans.
  • Test and inspect complex roadway and structure construction work.
  • Resolve materials and methods compliance problems with contractors.
  • Oversee inspection of major or complex structure projects.
  • Perform design drafting and complex calculations.
  • Check and correct drawings, calculations, and plans.
  • Design traffic control and pavement marking plans.
  • Review less complex roadway plans from private firms and prepare technical correction letters.
  • Design less complex roadway projects, including new bridge approaches.
  • Train and instruct technicians and review their work.
  • Supervise technicians developing and preparing traffic control plans.

Job description

  • Support the Division 11/District 2 Construction Unit

  • Serve as Chief Inspector, conducting independent complex inspections and supervising lower-level inspectors onsite
  • Direct and supervise survey crews as a survey crew leader
  • Review and process final estimates and compute pro-rata time extensions and contract beginning interest dates
  • Check pay record book quantities and review as-built construction plans
  • Test and inspect complex or controversial roadway and structure construction work
  • Resolve materials and methods compliance problems with contractors
  • Oversee or perform inspection of major or complex structure construction projects
  • Perform advanced manual and electronic design drafting and complex calculations
  • Check and correct drawings, calculations, and plans
  • Design traffic control and pavement marking plans
  • Review less complex roadway plans from private engineering firms and prepare technical correction letters

  • Train and instruct technicians and review their work

Requirements
  • Must be able to legally operate a motor vehicle
  • Must be able to effectively communicate with engineers, developers, members of the public, public officials, and NCDOT personnel
  • Excellent organizational and time-management skills
  • Ability to write memos and reports that clearly convey technical information and engineering concepts
  • Computer experience including office software and drafting software
  • Knowledge of engineering standards, policies and procedures related to transportation
  • Experience in customer service related to resolving problems involving complicated engineering concepts
  • Experience writing memos, reports, and emails that clearly convey technical information and engineering concepts
  • Experience applying engineering concepts to solve complex problems
  • Associate's degree in an applicable area of Engineering Technology or Survey Technology from an appropriately accredited institution and seven years of progressive technician experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience
