University of California, Berkeley’s Applied Nuclear Science Group seeks an Assistant Researcher to lead the development of a compact nuclear-imaging logging tool for cased-hole subsurface environments. The candidate will supervise R&D across universities, national labs, industry, and government partners.

The role includes prototype design, integration, testing, and Monte Carlo simulations with ML methods, plus mentoring of students and reporting on milestones.

Qualifications

• PhD in nuclear engineering or closely related discipline; international degree acceptable.
• At least two years of post-PhD research experience in nuclear instrumentation or radiation detection.
• Experience leading multi-institutional R&D projects and mentoring researchers.

Responsabilités

• Lead development of a compact nuclear-imaging logging tool for cased-hole environments; oversee prototype design, integration and testing.
• Conduct alpha-particle detection with D-T neutron generators; operate D-D and D-T neutron systems.
• Perform Monte Carlo radiation-transport simulations and ML-assisted design optimization; predict performance.
