PREP Research Associate

This position is part of the National Institute of Standards (NIST) Professional Research Experience (PREP) program. NIST recognizes that its research staff may wish to collaborate with researchers at academic institutions on specific projects of mutual interest. The PREP program requires staff from a wide range of backgrounds to work on scientific research in many areas.

Research Title

Dimensional Calibration Development / Dimensional Calibration Traceability

Work Details

The candidate will use their expertise to support gage block and other dimensional calibration services at NIST, including maintaining NIST dimensional reference masters and performing measurements for internal research efforts.

Key Responsibilities

• Open, clean and distribute customer gages to NIST technical professionals for calibration.
• Perform measurements of NIST reference gage block masters and compare to historical measurements, under supervision.
• Acquire, calibrate and place into service, with supervision, reference gage block masters.
• Learn and perform gage block measurements using optical interferometry.

Qualifications

• Bachelor of Science in Science or Engineering.
• At least 11 months of relevant experience.
• Familiarity with NIST's gage block calibration methods and procedures.
• Familiarity with NIST's quality system requirements.
