Job summary

PENN Entertainment is seeking a qualified professional to support racing operations and weight handicapping at our Hobbs, NM location. The role involves coordinating schedules, reviewing performance data, and ensuring eligibility for entries and races.

The ideal candidate will hold a Master’s degree or equivalent with strong analytical and reporting skills, able to collaborate with track management and racing officials. This position requires adherence to licensing rules and safety procedures.

Qualifications

  • Master's degree (M.A.) or equivalent, or four to ten years related experience.
  • Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business materials and regulations.
  • Ability to write reports and present information to groups.

Responsibilities

  • Assists the Racing Secretary in planning racing schedules and assigning handicapped weights.
  • Analyzes workout and past performance records to arrange races fairly.
  • Handicaps horses by weight based on age, sex, earnings, and distances.
  • Plans race types and purses with track management.
  • Reviews entry requests and confirms eligibility.
  • Manages entry fees and ownership records.
  • Prepares and reviews racing information for newspapers and programs.
  • Directs staff handling racing information and stable space.
  • Records racing results and ownership changes for archival.
  • Monitors race entries to verify eligibility.

Responsibilities
  • Assists the Racing Secretary in planning and arranging racing schedules and assigning handicapped weights to horses at racetrack by performing the following duties. ESS
  • Analyzes official workout and past performance records to arrange races between horses of equal experience and ability.
  • Handicaps horse in each race by assigning weight it will carry based on data such as age, sex, total winnings of horse, and distances of races won.
  • Confers with track management personnel to plan types of races to schedule and to determine purse for each race.
  • Reviews application requesting permission to enter and train horse for competition.
  • Accepts application and entrance fee from owner.
  • Registers names of persons having financial interest in horse.
  • Reviews racing information to be published in newspaper, racing form, and daily racing program.
  • Directs activities of workers engaged in duties such as compiling racing information and assigning stable space.
  • Records information regarding official racing result to keep file on each horse's ability.
  • Records changes of ownership and submits report to track officials.
  • Observes race to study ability and form of horse, verifies selection of entries, and assignment of handicap weights.
  • Accept entries and check eligibility of each horse entered. -
Requirements
  • Master's degree (M. A.) or equivalent; or four to ten years related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations.
  • Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals. Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of managers, clients, customers, and the general public.
  • Ability to work with mathematical concepts such as probability and statistical inference, and fundamentals of plane and solid geometry and trigonometry.
  • Ability to apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions to practical situations.
  • Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists.
  • Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.
  • Must qualify for licensing with the New Mexico Racing Commission.
  • Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, color vision, and peripheral vision. The employee must regularly lift, push, pull and/or move up to 75 pounds and have the ability to push, pull, reach, bend, twist, stoop, stack, crouch, kneel and balance when performing job duties in varying work areas such as confined spaces.
