Job summary

The Maryland Office of the Public Defender (MOPD) is seeking experienced, zealous litigators to join the Towson-based District VIII Baltimore County office as Assistant Public Defender II or III. The role demands strong trial skills, independent caseload management, and collaboration with social workers and staff to address systemic inequity.

Responsibilities include representing clients at all stages of criminal proceedings, researching law, drafting pleadings, and negotiating with prosecutors.

Qualifications

• Criminal jury trial experience required.
• Active Maryland Bar membership in good standing.
• Attorneys barred in another state must become Maryland Bar members within 18 months.
• Strong writing, research, and oral advocacy skills.
• Ability to manage a high caseload in a fast-paced, team-oriented environment.

Responsibilities

• Represent clients in all stages of their criminal case, including bail hearings, motions, trial, and post-trial hearings.
• Ensure clients are heard and their rights are protected.
• Conduct legal research and analyze changes in laws and precedents for trial preparation.
• Draft reports, briefs, motions, and correspondence for clients.
• Communicate effectively with clients, team members, and service providers to achieve optimal outcomes.
• Counsel clients on changes in law and court decisions.
• Negotiate with prosecutors, judges, and others to resolve cases favorable to clients.
• Manage a full caseload independently and resourcefully.
• Pursue ongoing professional development through training sessions.
