Job summary

Georgia Public Defender Council in conjunction with the Waycross Judicial Circuit Public Defender’s Office seeks an Assistant Public Defender to represent indigent defendants in the Superior Courts. The position can be filled at APD 1–4 level, based on experience.

Primary duties include zealous representation, evaluating referrals to accountability courts and social services, and mentoring less experienced attorneys. Bar admission in Georgia is required within one year of hire.

Qualifications

• Juris Doctorate from an accredited school and GA bar license or eligibility to sit for next Georgia Bar exam.
• Strong commitment to indigent criminal defense and good standing with the State Bar of Georgia.
• Experience in criminal defense preferred.

Responsibilities

• Zealously represents indigent clients in all appropriate criminal proceedings.
• Evaluates referrals to accountability courts and diversion programs.
• Provides mentorship to less experienced attorneys.
• Performs related duties as assigned.
