Position

Assistant Professor, School of Biological Sciences (Pullman, WA) – Permanent, full‑time, 9‑month, tenure‑track faculty position (Employee Type: Faculty; Term: 9Month).

Responsibilities

• Conduct research that leverages modern genomic tools to gain fundamental or applied insights into evolutionary processes in vertebrate systems, including mutation, recombination, gene duplication and loss, structural variation, transposable elements, gene expression, regulatory evolution, and epigenetic modification.
• Integrate and apply innovative analytical approaches to link genome and phenome, study genome architecture, and examine evolutionary processes such as hybridization, adaptation, introgression, or speciation.
• Teach undergraduate and graduate courses in biology, with preference for courses in comparative vertebrate anatomy or vertebrate taxon‑focused curricula, evolutionary biology, genome biology, contemporary genetics, or evolutionary medicine.
• Mentor undergraduate and graduate students, supporting independent research projects and promoting a culture of rigorous inquiry.
• Serve in ways that reflect and enhance WSU’s land‑grant mission, including fostering access and opportunity in research, teaching, and service.

Qualifications

• Earned Ph.D. in biology or a related discipline; at least 6 months of postdoctoral research experience prior to the anticipated start date.
• Demonstrated record of research accomplishment in vertebrate evolutionary genomics, evidenced by publications and presentations at scientific meetings.
• Effective communication skills with students and colleagues; demonstrated or potential for engaging in productive collaborations.
• Evidence of teaching effectiveness or potential for effective teaching of undergraduate and graduate courses in biology.
• Experience or potential for quality mentoring of undergraduate and graduate students undertaking independent research projects.
• Evidence of seeking or being awarded intramural or extramural funding, commensurate with the candidate’s career stage.

Salary and Benefits

Academic salary: $80,000.00 to $95,000.00, commensurate with experience and qualifications. This position is NOT eligible for overtime.
