Job summary

TTUHSC El Paso's Department of Surgery seeks an academic hand surgeon to join our clinical and teaching mission. The role includes supervising residents, advancing a hand division strategy, and providing patient care in a Level 1 trauma center setting.

You will participate in research and governance, contribute to public service, and pursue ongoing board certification pathways through ABOS or ABS Academic Pathway as appropriate. Appointment is at the faculty level.

Qualifications

• MD or DO required.
• ACGME-accredited Orthopaedic/General/Plastic Surgery Residency completed.
• Hand Surgery Fellowship (ACGME) completed.
• Texas medical licensure or eligibility.
• Eligibility for secondary faculty appointment in Department of Surgery.

Job description

Responsibilities

• Supervises and teaches residents and medical students in classroom and clinical settings.
• Works in close conjunction with other hand surgery colleagues to develop a long‑term hand division strategic plan.
• Performs Hand and Microvascular call coverage at local hospitals.
• Provides patient care in the area of hand and microvascular surgery in the inpatient and outpatient settings affiliated with a Level 1 Trauma Center.
• Engages in advancement of scientific knowledge through research and/or scholarship.
• Serves the academic community through participation in institutional governance, such as committee work and other administrative duties.
• Contributes to the community through academically‑related public service complementary to the institutional mission.
• Maintains current board certification; or actively works toward fulfilling the eligibility criteria to qualify for board certification through the ABOS or ABS Academic Pathway, including achievement of academic promotion to the rank of associate professor and excellence in clinical care, research and teaching.
• Maintains a faculty appointment in good standing in the Department of Surgery (for candidates whose primary training is in Plastic Surgery or General Surgery).
• Ensures compliance with HIPAA and billing regulations.
• Adheres to institutional and departmental policies and procedures.
• Demonstrates professionalism in accordance with the Paul L. Foster School of Medicine’s Declaration of Faculty Professional Responsibility.
• Upholds and promotes the value‑based culture of TTUHSC El Paso.

Qualifications

• M.D. or D.O. degree
• One of the following: Successful completion of an Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME)-accredited Orthopaedic Surgery, General Surgery or Plastic Surgery Residency Program, or
• For academic orthopaedic surgeons who have received graduate medical education outside the United States or Canada, completion of an Orthopaedic Surgery Residency Program with documentation of having successfully passed the applicable certification examination in the candidate’s country of education and prior practice, and a minimum of two years of clinical postgraduate training in the USA/Canada at a program accredited by the ACGME
• Successful completion of an ACGME-accredited Hand Surgery Fellowship Program
• Texas medical licensure, or eligibility for medical licensure in Texas
• Qualifications for secondary faculty appointment in the Department of Surgery for the candidates whose primary training is in General Surgery or Plastic Surgery
