DescriptionThe Department of Languages and Cultures at Loyola University New Orleans, a Jesuit institution committed to academic excellence, social justice, and the education of the whole person, invites applications for a full-time, tenure-track Assistant Professor position in Spanish and Latin American Studies. This position is part of the university's broader commitment to fostering inclusive excellence in the liberal arts and to serving a diverse student body, including its aspiration to become a Hispanic-Serving Institution (HSI).
We seek a teacher-scholar who will bring energy and vision to our Spanish and Latin American Studies curricula and who is dedicated to advancing the university's mission through teaching, research, and service.
Examples of DutiesTeaching Responsibilities: The successful candidate will teach a 3-3 course load, including undergraduate courses in Spanish language, literature, and culture, as well as offerings in Latin American Studies. We especially welcome applicants with interest or experience in teaching courses that engage themes of social justice, migration, Indigenous cultures, race and identity, or gender and sexuality in Latin America, as well as Spanish language coursework designed specifically for heritage speakers. The ability to contribute to the university's Loyola Core (general education) program is expected.
Research Expectations: Candidates are expected to maintain an active research agenda in Spanish and/or Latin American Studies. We encourage scholarship that reflects interdisciplinary approaches, community engagement, or public-facing research aligned with Jesuit educational values, such as the promotion of justice, intercultural understanding, and care for marginalized communities.
Service Responsibilities: Faculty are expected to participate in departmental and university service, advise students, support program development, and contribute to ongoing efforts to foster a diverse and inclusive academic community.
Typical Qualifications- Ph.D. in Spanish, Latin American Studies, or a closely related field by the time of appointment
- Native or near-native fluency in Spanish and English
- Demonstrated excellence in undergraduate teaching
- A record or strong promise of scholarly achievement
Preferred Qualifications:
- A commitment to teaching and mentoring students from diverse backgrounds
- Interest in contributing to the university's identity as a Jesuit institution and its liberal arts mission
- Experience or interest in supporting institutional goals related to becoming a Hispanic-Serving Institution (HSI)
