Job summary

The School of Music at Tennessee Tech University invites applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professor of Clarinet, beginning August 1, 2027.

Responsibilities include teaching the clarinet studio, directing the clarinet choir, recruiting students, and administering the clarinet program while performing as principal clarinet with the Bryan Symphony Orchestra and Cumberland Quintet. ABD considered; degree must be conferred before start date.

Qualifications

• Earned Doctorate in Music required; ABD may be considered but degree conferred before start date.
• Evidence of excellence as a performer and teacher.

Essential Functions:

Responsibilities include teaching the clarinet studio and directing the clarinet choir. Supervise inventory and maintenance of the department's clarinet equipment. Rehearse and perform as Principal Clarinet with the resident Bryan Symphony Orchestra and Cumberland Quintet (faculty woodwind ensemble). Administer all aspects of the Tennessee Tech clarinet program. Recruitment of students (especially clarinet majors). Other responsibilities, such as classroom instruction in core music courses may be assigned as determined by the candidate's qualifications and departmental needs. Build and maintain professional relationships with public school music teachers and be an active participant in the School of Music.

Commensurate with education and experience.

Minimum qualifications:

Earned Doctorate in Music required. (ABD may be considered, but degree must be conferred before job start date.) Evidence of excellence as a performer and teacher.

Preferred qualifications:

Experience as a performer in solo, orchestral, and chamber or quintet settings. Experience teaching Woodwind Techniques course for music education majors. Experience as a teacher at the university level, in private instruction and/or in the public schools. Evidence of recruiting. Participation in regional, national, and international conferences.
