Department Overview

The Department of Biology at Appalachian State University comprises 44 faculty and 6 technicians, serving approximately 950 biology majors and 70 graduate students. The department offers instruction through classrooms, labs, and research experiences, with faculty teaching an average of three courses per semester. Facilities include the William and Ruth Dewel Microscopy Facility, a shared research space with flow cytometry, cell culture, and Illumina sequencing, and greenhouses, nature preserves, and field sites. New faculty receive mentoring through the Faculty Mentoring Program and the Center for Excellence in Teaching, Learning, and Student Success.
