Job summary

Rowan-Virtua School of Osteopathic Medicine seeks an Assistant Professor to teach physiology and/or biochemistry content, facilitate in-person PBL small groups, and provide large group lectures. The role covers duties in the Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine, Physician Assistant program, and the School of Translational Biomedical Engineering and Sciences as needed.

The faculty member will be based at the Stratford, NJ or Sewell, NJ campus with some travel between campuses.

Qualifications

  • Terminal degree in medicine/health sciences with expertise in physiology and/or biochemistry.
  • Minimum of 3 years teaching medical students and small-group facilitation (PBL).

Responsibilities

  • Teach physiology and/or biochemistry content and lead small group PBL sessions.
  • Deliver large group lectures and participate in curriculum committees as assigned.
  • Contribute to case review, exam item writing, and faculty development.

Job description

The Department of Medical Education and Scholarship at Rowan-Virtua School of Osteopathic Medicine (SOM) is seeking a faculty member at the rank of Assistant Professor to teach physiology and/or biochemistry content, facilitate in-person small groups of problem-based learning (PBL), and provide large group lectures. This position will cover faculty duties as assigned in the Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine, Physician Assistant program, and the School of Translational Biomedical Engineering and Sciences as their expertise allows.

Expectations
  • The faculty member will be based at either the Stratford, NJ or Sewell, NJ campus, with some travel between campuses as needed.
  • Facilitate weekly PBL small group sessions and/or large group lectures as needed. Be available to answer students’ questions in content areas of expertise.
  • Complete mid-block (formative) and end-of-block (summative) student evaluations. Ensure all evaluations are executed using the specified template to maintain consistency and adherence to established guidelines.
  • Contribute to case review, case-writing, case-enhancement, item writing for exams, faculty development, and medical education research.
  • Faculty should be fully committed to learning how to facilitate problem-based learning, which includes participating in training for PBL and ongoing faculty development programs provided. You are not expected to be an expert in all content of the case.
  • Ensure support for student learning through collaboration with the Center for Student Success (CSS) and/or Office of Faculty Development
  • Know curriculum policies and procedures related to pre-clerkship delivery.
  • Participate in academic committees as assigned.
  • Whenever possible, vacations should be scheduled during the students’ time off in the winter, spring, and summer. When you have conferences or vacation, prior notification will be required so that a substitute can be provided for your group.
  • Other duties as assigned by the Chair of the Department of Medical Education and Scholarship.
Qualifications
  • Terminal degree (PhD, DO, or MD) with expertise in physiology and/or biochemistry. For physician applicants, clinical duties and/or teaching in the simulation center may be required.
  • At least 3 years experience teaching medical students and small group facilitation, specifically PBL experience, is preferred.
Salary

In compliance with the State of New Jersey’s Pay Transparency Act, the salary range for this position is $104,00 to $124,000. Placement into the range is determined by the candidate’s qualifications, professional experience and other factors.
