Essential Job Duties

The Department of Horticultural Science at North Carolina State University seeks a visionary Assistant Professor in Landscape Design. This full-time, tenure-track position emphasizes innovative teaching, interdisciplinary collaboration, and impactful landscape design practices. The successful candidate will have a strong background in landscape design and horticulture, with expertise in plant knowledge, innovative and various design skills, and scholarly contributions to the field of expertise. This position will be 100% teaching and will report to the Department Head of Horticultural Science.

Essential Responsibilities:

  • Deliver 2-3 courses per semester, using face-to-face and online platforms.
  • Teach core and elective courses in landscape design and related horticultural/design topics aligned with departmental needs and individual interests.
  • Advise undergraduate students and serve as chair, co-chair, or a committee member in training graduate students.
  • Enhance program impact through public engagement, built works, and/or distance education coordination.
  • Pursue external funding to support innovative programs consistent with scholarly expectations as a tenure-track faculty member.
  • Contribute to professional societies, university programs, and departmental governance

Qualifications

Minimum Education and Experience

  • Terminal degree in Landscape Architecture or a closely related field (e.g., Master’s in Landscape Architecture, Ph.D., or equivalent).
  • Proven or demonstrable potential in undergraduate and graduate teaching in landscape design.

Other Required Qualifications

  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Proficiency in relevant technologies and tools.
  • Capacity to thrive and lead in an academic environment focused on teaching, research, and extension.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience teaching landscape design at the collegiate level.
  • Proven track record of collaboration, publishing, and securing external funding.
  • Leadership in curriculum development and Scholarship of Teaching and Learning.
  • Degree in Horticultural Science (preferred but not required).
  • Licensed Landscape Architect.

Required License(s) Or Certification(s)

  • A valid driver’s license is required for travel. Valid NC Driver’s License or the ability to obtain one within 60 days of hire.

The incumbent will need to drive independently to Horticultural Field Labs and to other field sites.
