Job description

Department: Civil and Environmental Engineering Salary: Commensurate with experience

Description

The Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at the University of Houston (UH) invites applications for a full-time, tenure-track faculty positions at the Assistant Professor rank. The Department seeks outstanding candidates who will establish internationally recognized, externally funded research programs, contribute to undergraduate and graduate education, and collaborate across disciplinary boundaries within the Department, Cullen College of Engineering, and University.

The Department seeks an exceptional scholar to strengthen its research and educational programs in hydrology, hydraulics, earth system modeling, watershed science, and water resources. Areas of research interest include, but are not limited to, floods, droughts, hydraulics, hydrodynamics, sediment transport, hurricanes, coastal engineering, water security, weather extremes, infrastructure resilience to hydrologic hazards, and coupled natural-human infrastructure systems.

Candidates employing advanced computational, observational, and data-driven research approaches are especially encouraged to apply. Relevant approaches may include hydrologic and earth system modeling, experimental research, remote sensing, machine learning, and artificial intelligence. The successful candidate will have opportunities to collaborate with faculty working in environmental fluid mechanics, water resources, hydrology, natural disasters, hydrodynamics, remote sensing, earth system modeling, and the use of machine learning and high-performance computing to understand extreme weather events such as hurricanes, compound flooding, and coastal resilience.

The position will contribute to undergraduate and graduate instruction in hydrology and water resources and may develop courses in related areas such as watershed processes, flood prediction, urban and coastal flooding, water infrastructure, and hydrologic extremes. Houston, Texas, and the Gulf Coast provide a compelling setting for research addressing compound floods, hurricanes, coastal processes, water security, and the resilience of natural and engineered water systems.

This position advances the University of Houston Research Priorities in Energy, Security and Sustainability through research addressing water security, hydrologic extremes, infrastructure resilience, and the impacts of floods, droughts, and hurricanes on natural and engineered systems, and in Aerospace and Earth and Planetary Sciences through research on hydrology, earth system processes, watershed science, and coastal change. Research incorporating remote sensing, advanced modeling, artificial intelligence, and machine learning also aligns with the Digital Futures and the Human Experience priority.

Qualifications

Applicants must have an earned Ph.D. in Civil Engineering, Environmental Engineering, or a closely related field by the time of appointment. Candidates are expected to develop and maintain an internationally recognized and externally funded research program; publish high-impact scholarship; mentor graduate and undergraduate researchers; contribute to undergraduate and graduate teaching; and participate in professional and University service.

Candidates whose scholarship creates collaborations across traditional disciplinary boundaries and complements existing research strengths within the Civil and Environmental Engineering Department, the Cullen College of Engineering, and the broader University of Houston research enterprise are particularly encouraged to apply.

University, College, and Department

The University of Houston is a Carnegie-designated Tier One public research university recognized with a Phi Beta Kappa chapter for excellence in undergraduate education. UH serves the globally competitive Houston and Gulf Coast region by providing world-class faculty, experiential learning, and strategic industry partnerships. Located in the nation's fourth-largest city and one of the most vibrant regions in the country, UH enrolls nearly 49,000 students.

The Cullen College of Engineering is a major center for engineering research and education, with more than $58 million in annual research expenditures, more than 200 tenured and tenure-track faculty, and extensive research infrastructure supporting interdisciplinary scholarship. Cullen is ranked among the Top 50 public graduate engineering schools in the United States. Located within one of the nation’s largest engineering and technology economies, the College has strong connections with Houston’s energy, aerospace, health care, and technology sectors, creating exceptional opportunities for industry partnership, technology translation, and research impact.

The Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering conducts interdisciplinary research aimed at advancing the sustainability and resilience of natural and built environments. Its approximately 20 tenure-track faculty members work across environmental engineering, hydrosystems, geosensing, geotechnical and structural engineering, and mechanics, using advanced sensing, computational modeling, and other emerging technologies. Houston and the Gulf Coast provide a distinctive living laboratory for research on water systems, flooding and coastal hazards, infrastructure, environmental quality, and urban resilience, with substantial opportunities for collaboration with public agencies, industry, and other research institutions.

Employees are expected to have a home address in the state of Texas for the duration of their appointments. Official transcripts are required for a faculty appointment and will be requested upon selection of the final candidates. All positions at the University of Houston-System are security-sensitive and will require a criminal history check. Individuals conducting research in critical infrastructure areas (i.e., communication infrastructure systems, cybersecurity systems, electric grid, hazardous waste treatment systems, and/or water treatment facilities) are subject to regular review to ensure the security and integrity of the research is maintained. The University of Houston System and its universities are Equal Opportunity Institutions. Everyone is encouraged to apply.
