Job description

Assistant Professor, Tenure Track Position in Early Modern/Modern Chinese History (field open)

The History Department of the University of Massachusetts Boston seeks applicants for a tenure-track assistant professor in any field of early modern or modern Chinese history beginning September 1, 2027. Applicants should have an active research agenda, evidence of excellence in teaching, and a Ph.D. in History or a closely related field in hand by August 31, 2027.

The History Department has thematic strengths in public history; cultural and social history; science, medicine, and health; imperialism, colonialism, and indigeneity; and labor and food history. Our students take courses in African, Latin American, and Asian history that complement our offerings in United States and European history. UMass Boston and the College of Liberal Arts prioritize student success and interdepartmental collaboration. We seek a colleague whose regional expertise in the history of China since the early modern period will expand and diversify our curriculum and also reinforce college-wide expertise in East Asian studies.

Faculty in the History Department teach an effective 2-2 load. The position would include teaching undergraduate surveys in Chinese and East Asian history, as well as upper-level courses in areas of specialization. We hope the incoming sinologist will also contribute to our graduate (MA) program, which has both online and in-person tracks.

Applications are due by October 1, 2026. Candidates should provide a cover letter, curriculum vitae, statement of teaching interest and philosophy, three letters of recommendation, and graduate transcripts.

Please send all inquiries to the Search Chairs Professor Sana Haroon and Professor Ben Johnson at Sana.Haroon@umb.edu and Benjamin.Johnson@umb.edu.

UMass Boston is an urban public research university with a teaching soul, whose impact is both local and global. We are the third most diverse university in the country – more than 60% of our undergraduate students come from minoritized communities and groups and more than half of our students are the first in their families to attend a college or university. Thus, our students come to us from richly diverse life experiences and backgrounds; they bring to our classrooms and research settings the robust range of perspectives growing out of the socio-cultural, economic, and historical contexts in which they have lived, along with the challenges they encounter, engage, and strive to overcome. We invite applications from candidates who engage the diverse life experiences of our student body, who appreciate that students bring their holistic selves into the academic setting, and who recognize and articulate how their own life experiences and backgrounds have shaped their journeys, practices, and commitments as researchers, scholars, and educators.

UMass Boston expects to pay within an approximate range between $80,000 and $84,417 for this position.

The specific pay for this position will be determined by the University based on the consideration of all relevant factors when and if it decides to extend an offer of employment.

UMass Boston is committed to the full inclusion of all qualified individuals. As part of this commitment, we will ensure that persons with disabilities are provided reasonable accommodations for the hiring process. If reasonable accommodation is needed, please contact HR@umb.edu or 617-287-5150.
