Job description

Position Summary

Allan Hancock College is a California public community college located in northern Santa Barbara County. The college is ranked as one of the five best community colleges in California and one of the top 120 community colleges in the nation. Approximately 11,500 credit students enroll each semester at one of the college's four locations in Santa Maria, Lompoc, Santa Ynez Valley, or at Vandenberg Space Force Base. This is a full-time, 175-day (10-month annual contract) tenure-track faculty position in the Social and Behavioral Sciences Department. The faculty member will act as the coordinator of the Human Services program and provide instruction in a wide range of human services courses including case management skills, counseling skills, and addiction treatment skills (refer to the College catalog for current courses, certificates, and degrees); provides orientation and supervision for students doing field internships; holds scheduled office hours; participates in program review and curriculum development; and engages in college service activities as defined in the collective bargaining agreement.

This tenure-track assignment will begin in August 2022. New faculty will be invited to teach a variety of courses and will also contribute through instruction and service to expanding the department's learning communities in support of our Latinx, AAPI, and African American students, as well as other historically underrepresented student populations.

Essential Functions and Qualifications
Duties and Responsibilities
  • Teaching strategies that address the needs of students with a variety of learning styles, skills, motivation, and educational goals.
  • Counseling and student development theories and relevant applications to program.
  • California Association of Alcohol and Drug Educators (CAADE), Addiction Counselor Certification Board of California (ACCBC) and National Commission for Certifying Agencies (NCCA).
  • Medi-Cal, Affordable Care Act, Mental Health Parity, and Addiction Equality Act.
  • Trends in the Human Services, Mental Health, and Addiction Treatment fields.
Desired Qualifications
  • Maintain a sensitivity and understanding to the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, and ethnic backgrounds of staff and students and of staff and students with disabilities.
  • Provide academic, career, and personal guidance for Human Services students.
  • Work with and assist students having a broad range of skills, motivation, and academic or career technical education goals.
  • Communicate effectively, both in oral and written communications, and demonstrate strength in interpersonal communication.
  • Collaborate with both instructional and service faculty and staff to assist students to understand and use counseling, college success services, and resources.
  • Identify and use learning outcomes and assessments that lead to course and program improvements.
  • Design, review, and evaluate curriculum and make recommendations to maintain program currency for both vocational and transfer students.
  • Act as primary contact and coordinator for the Human Services program.
  • Schedule classes for the Human Services program.
  • Coordinate with Human Resources to recruit, hire, mentor and evaluate part-time faculty.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Master’s degree in counseling psychology, clinical psychology, psychology, sociology, or social welfare (e.g. MSW).
  • or Bachelor’s degree in an accredited institution in one of the aforementioned academic fields plus two years of full-time experience in the workplace. Master’s degree preferred.
  • or The equivalent as outlined in Board Policy 7211 (Download PDF reader).
Additional Information

The hiring salary range is $57,858 to $82,391 dependent upon education and experience.
