Job description

The Department of Urban and Regional Planning at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign is searching for a full-time Assistant Professor/Associate Professor/Professor with expertise in land-use and environmental planning. Candidates whose expertise includes local and regional governance, sustainability and climate, or ecology are particularly encouraged to apply. We are open to scholars who employ a range of innovative methods, ranging from data science and analytics to ethnography, to community-engaged research and decolonial approaches. While we prefer that candidates research and teaching engage questions of land use and environment in the U.S., we welcome those whose work incorporates a comparative or transnational perspective.

The campus and the Department provide ample support for faculty to conduct interdisciplinary research and innovative teaching. Members of the DURP faculty are involved in a broad array of ongoing research and public engagement activities throughout Illinois, the U.S., and internationally. DURP faculty contribute courses to the Department’s three degree programs: Bachelor of Arts in Urban Studies and Planning (BAUSP), Master of Urban Planning (MUP), and Regional Planning Ph.D.

The College of Fine and Applied Arts (FAA) is singular in the nation for its diversity, innovation and breadth. The college comprises the Schools of Music , Architecture, and Art and Design; Departments of Dance, Landscape Architecture, Theatre, and Urban and Regional Planning; the Sustainable Design program; Krannert Center for the Performing Arts; Krannert Art Museum; and Japan House. FAA employs more than 660 faculty members and staff, including more than 150 tenure system faculty members, and more than 1,850 undergraduate and 635 graduate students enroll in FAA’s more than 30 majors and 10 minors.

Salary and Appointment Information

This is a nine-month faculty appointment (paid over 12 months). The anticipated start date is August 16, 2027.

The budgeted salary range for the position is $76,000 to $85,000 at the Assistant Professor level, $91,000 to $110,000 at the Associate Professor level, and $115,000 to $135,000 at the Full Professor level. We strive to provide a competitive salary, considering factors such as available market data, internal equity, candidate’s experience and qualifications, and budget constraints.

This position is eligible for sponsorship for work authorization, except for sponsorship of a new H1B petition that would incur the $100,000 fee.

Applicants at the Assistant Professor level must have a promising research agenda and a strong commitment to undergraduate and graduate teaching. Applicants at the Associate or Full level must have a demonstrated record of excellence in research, teaching, and service. A Ph.D. in planning or related fields is required - ABD applicants who expect to complete their Ph.D. prior to the position start date are welcome to apply.
